but still, i really like this

and it is kind of funny, there is an albert einstein quote i recalled while listening to this clip, i have actually mentioned it around here not terribly long ago....and at the close of this talk, he quotes him as well! i was tickled. but that is just an aside

An excellent lecture. Throughout elementary school I was a library assistant. We are talking the Dewey Decimal System, lol. I was also a bookworm. It runs in the family, both my children love to read. I can't imagine not having a library at hand. And librarian's know EVERYTHING. In the rare event they don't know something they will work furiously until they do.

I still read fairy tales.

Thank you agnes.

libraries still use the dewey decimal system me thinks. as a kid, my history with books as far as accessibility and variety went is kind of.....checkered? but anyhow! yes, i agree with you about librarians. i know i have asked them about stuff, (as recent as recently) and it seems they would become just as interested in finding out about it as i would be. and i really enjoyed the process.

agnes, if they are still using the dewey decimal system (in my town) they have NO idea how to use it. you are lucky to find a book alphabetically filed within the shelf you are looking at, never mind numerical . you also have to check, first names and every book beginning with "the". if you hit the jackpot and find the authors name you have a 50/50 chance of finding the book. In our society they are better off going with bar codes that can identify books out of place.

all i know is, them letters and numbers on the book's spine and such have made it easy for me to locate a book on the shelf, and to know exactly its place on the shelf (where on the shelf it belongs). however, i do recall seeing a sign on some shelves saying, "do not reshelve books", the staff preferring to do it, so as to avoid potential shelving mayhem.
