i have some stuff by william eaton here (he and r carlos nakai on flute) will eaton who also plays harp guitar, designs and builds them as well. he is a luthhhhhhhhhhh-ier. (i know there is at least one o' them who runs around loose here every once in a while)

Yep, it's a udu. I've got three of 'em. They're not too loud but they're pretty cool sounding, sort of like a soft tabla drum "baahooo" sound. You've got all of the Elements there, too: Earth (clay), Water (with the clay), Fire (when it gets kilned), and Air (that makes the sound).

yeah,,,i was noticing a similarity with the udu sound to a sound i was hearing in some indian music (i did have to look up what a tabla was,,,(so as not to give myself airs) and yet the udu sounded distinctly african) and so now that is explained
