jazz is not a very appreciated music but the 80's and early ninties were definitely one of the greatest downtown creative era's. i found this looking for a cecil mcbride with uri caine given that post my ceashel. if you can't handle late 20th century jazz don't try it!

i saw Jim Hall in a little jazz room in one of those hotels in Chicago along the lake front...the one by the Chicago Art Museum. then when the show ended around 1130 i went down behind the hotel and saw Junior Wells in his joint right before that hotel before he passed and his bar later became Buddy Guy's in an expanded edition (Buddy took over the sleazy sex shop that next door when Junior owned the place).

saw this guy at an old VZD's on North Walker in OKC, a converted circa 20's drug store...saw him, buddy guy and albert collin's there in a three week period back in the 80's. little bitty place across from the cock of the walk saloon

Well....it is by me!

Have Directv here and I spend a lot of time on the "Real Jazz" channel when I'm cleaning house and such.
Now understand, I can fit in a thimble what I know about Jazz. It's rare that a song will pull me from one room to see what it is.

This one did though. Don't click unless you are in a really easy going mellow mood....No vid really just a picture of the man, but I really love this song.

Makes me picture slow dancing at last call in a smokey nightclub.

stephanie, i am pretty sure i know even less about jazz than you do!

...but anyway, your post made me think back to when i worked at a vegetarian, organic food, bookstore, healthy (well you get the picture)...type place in the late 70s and at the moment me and a workmate were working the register and one of the store owners put on some straight up jazz! or probably like free jazz! (right after some irish fiddle or something?) and we are like , "hey! we need some cigarettes!" (because we were going to start smoking up the place!) of course neither of us really smoked....silly silly girls!

but you all have inspired me to put on some duke ellington i got some time back in the early 80s!

I first started listening to these guys in the late 70's when I was living in Stillwater...the first listening to the downtown sound was the Horns of Dilema on this Violent Femmes track (not the one about eating beats and staining sheets) that featured John Zorn and Tim Berne (listen for the break its worth it)

I happend to come across this video on You Tube which I thought looked like a 70's video but I had never heard of the group before. I looked them up online & they are not a 70's group but a German gruop from the 90's who like the 70'sstuff & are influenced by it.

I found this one of Sony Geraci of the Outsiders group CLimax doing their Hit Precious & Few. Someone made an animated video of him singing the song where it tell the story of a couple in love where the guy had to go to Vietnam & he came back. I thought they did a nice job on it...

i remember waiting outside one bitter cold day and there waiting too was a thin woman (i didn't really know her but i recognized her and she me) in just her office clothes, one of those thin business suits, some nylons, and high heeled shoes...she was shivering...just brittle looking...there i was in my 8 dollar possum skin coat i'd picked up at the goodwill...warmest coat i ever had...i was warm as toast! i don't know? i went over to her and took off my coat and put it around her...she just looked at me...i assured her i would be okay without it for a few minutes and put my arm around her and laughed and then so did she...i am not always good with words but what the hell?
