Kurt, I've always assumed that the melody and time signature were "givens". Most people have a good ear to replicate melody and
tempo by rote, but the accompanying chords are not so easy to
come by naturally. Tablature, therefore, only provides the missing ingredients, i.e. the chord progressions.

Oh, I'm with you Mike, once someone had heard a song, the melody will come back. Utah Phillips put out a songbook which is a set of cds. It's hearing the song for the first time (or it's been thirty years since hearing the song) that I was wondering about. A fingerstyle guitar book I started working through puts which finger plucks which string during the chord for this measure but that doesn't show length of note very well which you need to describe a melody.

Thanks, Arlo! I finally picked up an instruction book "Guitar from Scratch" after playing for thirty years. I was questioning his use of pinkie, ring, and middle to make a G chord but I guess he has a point about building up pinkie and ring finger strength and independence.

I've been working on a Banjo tab for this one (Frailing). I don't expect I will ever be able to write it down, but heres the chords to work with. Mind you I have also only been playing banjo for 8 weeks now. Maybe I will be able to write it up someday.

Well, what do folks think of this as a way to show the melody? F# or E- are quarter notes and F#-- and A--- are half notes and rest-- is a dotted half rest to try to give an idea of the timing.

Geeze, I wish my hand would stretch to do that D/F#...my pinkie finger just isn't long enough to reach and still do the D chord. I can't wrap my thumb around even a low profile neck either...I've got small hands and short fingers!!

I'll have to see how this all fits on an autoharp... I can hit the F# on that!

My nylon string classical guitar has a two inch wide neck so I can barely make that stretch either.

It sounds pretty good running standard tuning and thumbing sixth string second fret for D/F# if that is more possible.

Maybe make the D with pinkie, ring and middle and get the F# with the pointer? There must be a way...

ok, I'll but in. I was blessed with reasonably big hands (lucky me). Because of this I can play a lot of wild chords. One thing I used to do to increase my stretch was to spread my fingers apart over the corner of a table. Not so hard to cause damage but it eventually increased my reach. The other thing you could do is work it out for an open tuning, or something along those lines DADGAD or DADF#AD. I don't have much experience in these tunings but it's becoming a must these days i think.
