AND Denmik - you could also try staying anywhere along the PATH line in Jersey too, Jersey City, Newark - check it out. Much cheaper than NYC and 11 minutes and less than $5. home at night. The closest PATH station is about 25 blocks from Carnegie, but any number of us would drop you off or a lovely walk if the weather cooperates!

PATH far is under $5 round trip. (Im not exactly sure what it is anymore). Cabs start around $5 to sit down in the car.

(Like what was said about $30 from 57th street to the hotel in Fort Lee - which I would also believe is a conservative estimate.)

And just to be specific - the PATH trains arent subways. They are cleaner, more well lit, safer and go between NY & NJ.

Subways are more like sardine cans that only go thru NY & its boros, but they can get you anywhere in the city much faster & cheaper than any other way.

If I remember correctly, last year the cab fare from Carnegie to Penn Station was about $10. Train fare from Penn Station to Rahway was about $12.25 round trip. There is a new hotel in Rahway across from the train station. There are hotels near most of the train stations in NJ nearby NY.
I would assume that the closer to NY you are, the higher the rates. I could be wrong. I stay at my Mom's. The price can't be beat!

Carnegie to Penn Station is only about 16 short blocks and one or two long blocks . Fort Lee is about a hundred blocks in Manahattan and then over the GWBridge, which they usually charge more for (to go into NJ). It's a haul. Of course there are lots of buses that go to Fort Lee from the city, you might want to check that out.

Thanks for the info! This is something for me to think about. I am also going to check out Amtrak to from Hartford to NJ near New York City because I do not like driving in a huge city especially New York, to me its nerve wracking.

Although JohnC is the Blunderite with all the AMTRAK answers I can tell you that I think there is an Amtrak train from Hartford to NY. I'm pretty sure its easy enough to get to NJ from there - by continuing on the Amtrak train or transfering to a lighter rail.

Wow! I'd love to go to this - but I'd be traveling alone from Chicago area. Anyone interested in meeting up somehow? I wouldn't even know which airport to fly into. Just a thought. With enought time, could put it together for people to congregate and travel together. Could be a scheduling nightmare...but just imagine it !!!!! What an adventure for those of us that know nothing about NYC!

Fearless, there's a train from the Newark airport into Manhattan. LaGuardia means a relatively expensive cab ride into the city. Again, John C. and others will have more information, but if I were going this year, I'd try to book into Newark. And I'd book early because Thanksgiving weekend is a time many people go there--for the lighting of the Christmas trees, etc. One year, we traveled there on Thanksgiving Day. It was great--most people travel before or after that day, so planes weren't crowded, etc. And it's not hard to find a restaurant in NYC that has a nice Thanksgiving spread for the evening.
