Backing up a bit, I truely enjoyed the article in 'The Washington Post'. I had just got done reading Janets post, when my mail arrived. My sister in Columbia (MD) sent me a copy of said newspaper! Altho, I had allready read it on-line, the paper had a couple nice Arlo Pic's...One just casual, and one in a Tux...with John Nardolillo, taken in San Francico in 1999.

Just a question here

I thought I remembered people talking about Arlo being in a recent issue of Dirty Linen and I've not had much luck in finding it. If he was in it, could someone give me any info as to which issue it was? Greatly appreciated.

Sorry if I posted in the wrong spot here.

I don't recall him being in any recent ones so if he was I missed it. He was in an issue a few ys back which I have somewhere around here & was in an issue of SING OUT some yrs back which I have somewhere around here in the collection.. A folk concert from the Guthrie Center

GREAT BARRINGTON -- Folksinging legend Arlo Guthrie hosted an intimate New Year's Eve party last night at his church in Housatonic before an audience of 80 family and friends -- and
a nationwide television audience of several million people.

Guthrie was part of "ABC 2002," a live New Year's Eve special on ABC last night hosted by Peter Jennings from the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural
History in New York City.

The special began at 6:30 and continued until 10, when ABC's annual "New Year's Rockin' Eve" with Dick Clark came on.

Guthrie, his son, Abe, and daughter, Sara Lee, as well as assorted special guests, were scheduled to play "This Land Is Your Land" at about 8:30 p.m., according to producer Brad Newman.

The show was an outgrowth of a highly successful ABC show done two years ago on New Year's Eve, said Newman. During that show, which was also shot live, New Year's Eve
celebrants from all over the world were featured over a 29-hour time period.

Newman said ABC did not air a similar segment last year, "in part, I think, because they didn't want to seem redundant."

But in the wake of the Sept. 11 tragedies in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, said Newman, ABC wanted to resurrect the format. This time, he said, a total of 60
segments from throughout the world would be shot live as people celebrated the New Year.

"Some of the segments this year would be about doing something to raise the spirits of the people of America," Newman said. "And ABC thought that folk music would be a big part of that.
And when you think of folk music in America, you have to think of Arlo Guthrie."

Newman added that Jennings "is a huge Arlo Guthrie fan and was very excited when Mr. Guthrie agreed to do a segment."

The church during last night's show was arranged in a sort of "coffee house" motif, with chairs and tables with candles arrayed in front of the stage in the main hall of the church. Television
cameras, including one on a long cherry-picker, were placed at strategic points around the room and on the balcony over the main entrance.

Earlier in the day, the crew had looked warily at the train tracks across Van Deusenville Road. A reporter was asked how often the trains ran past the church. A couple times a day, they
were told.

"Please, not during our five minutes," one technician muttered.

Guthrie and his band sat on chairs on-stage and performed under rows of television lights.

'This Land is Your Land'

The band played "This Land Is Your Land," a song written by Arlo's father, Woody Guthrie. Newman explained that the band had also rehearsed another song in case of a snafu somewhere
else in the world.

"We have 60 remote locations, and they're checking them every five minutes in New York," said Newman. "We hope everything comes off all right, but there's always a chance it won't. So if
it doesn't, we'll be ready to come back here and do another song.

"We're live, but we did rehearse in case something happens," Newman said. "I guess you could say that we're live, but we're not that live."

Newman thanked the staff of the Guthrie Center as well as several local businesses that were hired for various duties, from catering to security.

"Everyone was really terrific," he said. "It's a very pleasant, laid-back atmosphere. We've really enjoyed being up here."

Guthrie is no stranger to national TV, having performed on David Letterman's late-night show, as well as "Later" with Bob Costas and the "Tomorrow Show" (the latter two are no longer on
the air). He has also been featured nationally and regionally on public radio.

Nice article about Arlo and the church. Of course, as usual, you have to have a username and password to see the article. The Times on the web just annoys the hell out of me, but it's worth it for Arlo stuff.
