[Arlo in Vanity Fair ? The times they are a changin for sure. I hope they pay him well.quote]

Annie Lebowitz does work for VF as well as Rolling Stone, so I think of them as interchangable! Either way, I cannot wait to see the portrait of Arlo, hope to see him in sliver and black and white.
:D

Arlo on Canada eh
From the Peterborough Examiner
Arlo Guthrie leads 'congregation' of song; Folk legend brings magic to Showplace
Posted By O'Toole, Dennis
Arlo Guthrie is on the first leg of a year-long solo tour that should raise a lot of smiles and spirits as he makes his rounds.

The full house at Showplace Peterborough gave him a warm reception and a good send-off in return for a generous overview of not only Arlo's career, but the very stuff that legends are made of and sustained by.

References to Cisco Houston, Len Chandler, Pete Seeger and Ramblin' Jack Elliott were personal anecdotes rather than historical footnotes; and Arlo's good humour was buoyed by rock-solid finger picking on guitar and a voice that has matured without losing the youthful reediness that this self-professed child of the '60s built his reputation on with tunes like the winsome "Motorcycle Song" and the epic ragtime rambling talkin' blues of "Alice's Restaurant," which occupied one side of his debut LP (and according to Arlo sold better in wartime PXs than retail outlets).

Arlo is a seasoned raconteur who understands his audience's need to hear the songs that link them to their youth while his between song banter illustrates the common threads of trying to live free in times of unpopular war and shrinking personal freedoms "In times like these," for instance.

Arlo sat at the grand piano and reprised his hit cover of Steve Goodman's classic train song "City of New Orleans" as well as a rare original (and untitled) instrumental ragtime piece from his youth.

Good humour abounded throughout, and Arlo's musings on the songwriting process offered bits of wit and wisdom such as the analogy of tunesmithing as fishing ("You sit and wait until a good one swims by" and his chiding of Bob Dylan as to why he didn't throw the odd little one back for someone else to catch).

Arlo displayed impressive guitar chops on a tribute to Hawaiian slack key pieces and several recent lyrics suggest his writing keeps pace with his playing.

Arlo made little reference to his dad until his encore, when he dusted off one of Woody's unheard gems and played "My Peace" on the 12-string guitar and encouraged the crowd to join in, which they did; a congregation raising the rafters in a simple plea, a gentle gift to the world.

This month's Vanity Fair magazine has a wonderful photo essay by Rolling Stone veteran Annie Liebovitz that features Arlo's family in ripe profusion,(alongside such luminaries as Joan Baez, Peter, Paul & Mary, Buffy Saint Marie, Joni Mitchell, Richie Havens and a sampling of young singers) maintaining that "If anything can save the world (and the music industry) from terminal cynicism it's a near half century of talent under the generous umbrella marked "folk."

Given Arlo's 40th anniversary of "Alice's Restaurant," that timeline obviously runs deeper ... I think Woody must be proud.

Also worthy of honourable mention on this night of great music were the Abrams Brothers, a talented trio of fiery pickers who entertained before the show and during intermission in the lounge, who bring their Bluegrass Christmas program to Showplace Dec. 8.

Arlo is interviewed by Tom Brokaw, and even rates an appearance on the cover of his new book , Boom!: Voices of the Sixties Personal Reflections on the '60s and Today

See it at Amazon.

Thanks for posting the article! I will be attending the show this Saturday I can't wait :D I went to last years show and it was awesome, Springfield Symphony Orchestra sounds just like the KSO and they did the same exact setlist as you would hear on the "In Times Like These" CD.
Will anyone else be attending this Saturday's show in Springfield, MA?
