Wilco is a wonder at Fillmore

Supporting "Mermaid Avenue II," Wilco has gone
out on the road. And from the get-go Saturday
night, it was clear that of all the Wilco incarnations
that could show up, the Guthrie-inspired Wilco
would be on stage tonight. I've seen Wilco shows
drenched with enough screaming feedback and
hopped-up playing to qualify as punk shows, with a
shirtless Tweedy playing guitar while crowd-surfing
on his back. Saturday night, he kept both his shirt
on and his cool, in a stellar two-hour show that may
have frustrated those who know Wilco can rock
with a capital R, but satisfied lovers of Wilco's more
country-flavored offerings. And fans of the two
"Mermaid Avenue" albums, which played heavily
into the early set list.

Sliding quickly into "Airline to Heaven," the
luminous first cut of the new album, which featured
some very pretty acoustic picking by Bennett, the
band set the mood. They dipped into the first album
for the irreverent honky-tonking "Christ for
President," which lapsed into a Stonesy raveup. The
same treatment was given "California Stars," which
worked less well than the more traditional approach
I've seen them take with that incredible tune.
"Secret of the Sea" was sweet and enigmatic, and
wildly pop-ish. And the charming "Hesitating
Beauty,"' which Guthrie penned for his daughter
Nora, was a show-stopper.

Q: "I think you said that you take some of your style from Woody Guthrie. Did you say that?"

JT: "Yes I did"

Q: "OK, your accompaniment (JT interrupts 'And I was the only one who said it') doesn't sound like the stuff that I've heard on the folkways (not sure of word here) albums. Woody Guthrie seems to have a driving almost monotonous kind of guitar playing. Is it your singing or your songs that you take or ...?" (not sure of words here)

JT: "I used to listen to the children's record of Woody Guthrie a lot and I suppose he's.a little bit of his phrasing is what I meant, vocal phrasing. I was listening to Woody Guthrie just today. That driving thing you know. He might be more.I mean he didn't have an amplifier or anything. His strings stand three quarters of an inch off the fret board and he uses ... you know a doubled over Shell credit card as a pick. (L) It just gets out there. Big cables and his bridge is bulging up like that. The guitar is ah ... ! And that's fine. I think that's part of the reason he played that way (plays some Woody Guthrie tune) But I listen to a lot of things."
