Now I got the song "They Call the Wind Mariah" dancing in my dangerous brain cells......I cannot stand the way Mariah hits those high squeaky Minnie Mouse lung pipes ......A songwriting for dummies genius should write a song called "They Call the Avalanche Mariah"....she can start an earthquake with just one squeak along with mice tumbling down her hill or should I say slopes? ......Mariah comes tumbling after!

The Boston Globe today Jan.22, 2006 on Page A3 has a column written by Sam Ellis titled "Characters Wanted: State needs politicians with more pizazz"
In it he wonders why MA doesn't have someone like Kinky Friedman running for governor. He then offers a few state residents that he feels could fill the bill.
One of which is: "Arlo Guthrie. Longtime resident of the Bezerkshires (his spelling). His laid-back-to-the-point-of-flatline demeanor would be a tonic to the State House circus. He tours a lot, but I'm thinking this is the guy who would push for naps. It worked for Reagan."
(and he could have added Arlo would be the only governor who could sing his state's folk song)

Arlo back with his 'friends,' 40 years after Alice

It may not have looked liked the Sixties, but it sure sounded like it Sunday night in Naples at the Philharmonic Center for the Arts.

Arlo Guthrie, on his Alice's Restaurant 40th Anniversary Massacre Tour, appeared before a full house of "friends," as he likes to think of those who come to see him perform these days.

Guthrie, 59, long hair now silver, has kept the righteous and humorous voice of his youth. As he strapped on his guitar to play, a man from the audience anxiously shouted out a request.

"Wasn't looking for suggestions just yet," quipped Guthrie.

Joining Guthrie and the Massacree Band was his son, Abe Guthrie, on keyboards and backup vocals. Guthrie told the crowd: "I'm not sure when Abe exactly joined the band. I just noticed one day that he wasn't going to high school anymore. I left high school before I graduated. What could I say?"

Special guest Gordon Titcomb rounded out the sound for the evening, playing splendidly on slide guitar, mandolin and banjo.

The crowd enjoyed such hits as the rocking "Coming into Los Angeles," the majestic "City of New Orleans," and his 1965 international anthem, "Alice's Restaurant," a song so long that radio stations in the late 1960s wouldn't play it.

Guthrie, the son of folk singer Woody Guthrie, spoke of the time his father told him, "If you can't be great, you can be long."

The consummate storyteller, Guthrie recounted memories of his childhood growing up during the boom of folk music. "When I was about 13, I heard a knock on the door one day. When I went to answer the door, this weird looking guy was standing there asking for my father. He looked strange."

That was his first encounter with Bob Dylan.

Guthrie is often asked about songwriting. "It's like fishing," Guthrie said. "After throwing back the bad ones, every once in a while you pull a good one from the water. I let some good ones get by that were for me. I think Bob Dylan got those. I must of been busy watching 'Star Trek.' Anyway, Just remember to fish upstream from someone like Dylan."

After touring in Australia in June of 2004, Guthrie informed the crowd that he wasn't crazy about the title of his latest release, "Live in Sidney."

"I didn't want to call it 'Live in Sidney,' " Guthrie retorted. "I mean. how boring. I wanted to call it, 'He's Only Mostly Dead.' "

Newer songs Sunday night included "Darkest Hour," "Halelwa Farewell" and a tribute to New Orleans Katrina victims with the New Orleans blues of "St. James Infirmary." Guthrie easily from playing a huge grand piano at center stage to a stool at front stage, to pick and strum his six-string and 12-string Martin acoustic guitars throughout the evening.

He paid several tribute to his father and turned the audience into a hand-clapping choir as he performed Woody's immortal, "This Land is Your Land," which brought a healthy ovation.

Guthrie returned for an encore and attempted to sing the "Motorcycle (Significance of the Pickle) Song.'"

An audience member hollered out a request for "the pickle song," to which Guthrie looked at steel player Titcomb and said, "Is that your cousin?" Then he explained how a mistake songwriters often pay for is to write a stupid song that becomes popular, and then forever has to be played.

Guthrie playfully stumbled through the song and stopped midway, halting the band and grumbling about his aging memory.

"Well as far as I'm concerned, this concert is over," Guthrie whooped. "Sorry ya'll had to pay for that. But it's too late. You already did."

Guthrie, along with his sister, Nora, are in the process of cataloging their father's catalog of more than 3,500 songs. The evening ended beautifully with Guthrie instructing the audience to sing along to one of the thousands of songs written by his dad that had yet been set to music, called "My Peace."
