Two Die in 2nd La. Rail Accident in 5 Days

INDEPENDENCE, La. (AP) - Amtrak's City of New Orleans train hit a truck at a railroad crossing Thursday, killing two men in the train's second fatal wreck in five days on a 10-mile span of track.

The men, one apparently in his 20s and the other in his 30s, were in an electrical contractor's bucket truck, Tangipahoa Parish sheriff's spokesman Chuck Reed said.

He said the impact knocked the Simpson Electric Co. cab off its chassis and broke the windshield on the train's first engine.

The men's names were withheld until their families could be notified. The train's 80 passengers apparently were unhurt.

The wreck about 50 miles northwest of New Orleans was less than 10 miles from Roseland, where a man, his two daughters and his fiancee's daughter died Sunday when the City of New Orleans train hit their pickup truck.

Both crossings have only crossbuck signs, without gates or lights.

The City of New Orleans runs almost the same route between Chicago and New Orleans as was used by the original Illinois Central train with that name, immortalized in Arlo Guthrie's hit song.

Thanks for the posting. Interview is great. After listening to it I went to the Apple iTunes site and was delighted to find that Sarah Lee and Johnny's album "Exploration" is listed as being available on the iTunes site.

"Exploration" is also available at amazon.com along with the rest of Sarah Lee and Johnny's cd's. Someone (me) has already posted a nice review along with a five star rating.
