I was typing away on the computer with the TV on in the background when that car ad with the "Riding In My Car" soundtrack was broadcast. The song is performed by Ramblin' Jack Elliott. I didn't hear enough of it to figure out if the version was drawn from Jack Elliott Sings The Songs of Woody Guthrie (Prestige-International 13016) or from Songs To Grown On (Folkways 7501) LP - but it's definitely Jack and definitely "vintage-era" Jack! Then again, all of Ramblin' Jack's stuff is "vintage-era!"

i was at the hardware store the other day and "city of new orleans" came on over the speakers...i wasn't really thinking, i just said, "arlo!" not loud or anything...next thing i know, someone nearby is humming along, someone else whistling...the whole song through was with audience participation.

I was thinking we all ought to start writing to the NY Shows - Letterman, O'Brien, Regis etc. to have Arlo, (maybe with Abe & Gordon) on their shows while they are in NY over Thanksgiving weekend. (Don't ya just love me suggesting ADG work a little bit MORE over the holiday.) But it would be huge exposure.

i like that idea reg! I can't recall seein' arlo on the late night circuit since I saw him and Pete on Carson many many years ago now. Has he had any more recent exposure of that sort? (Not counting his Politically Incorrect appearance)
Actually, in the same vein as the PI appearance, arlo should make an appearance on Daily Show. That would certainly get him mainstream exposure.

That would be great to get him on a late nite show! I remember he was supposed to have been on Letterman some yrs back but wasn't able to in the end cuz his performance on there would've conflicted with his Carnagie show. They didn't want him on any other nite but that one. That was a shame cuz we'd have really loved to have seen him on there...

Tomorrow night (Wed - Sept 28th) on public tv there is a show called "Get Up, Stand Up:The Story of Pop and Protest" which looks at social protest songs.  It will include some of Arlo's songs.  Thought you all might be interested in seeing it.
 
Another show the night after is "The Sixties:The Years That Shaped a Generation"  - not sure if there's anything about Arlo in it but I would expect so.

Began at 9 here in PA.... terrific show! Wish I'd taped it.

Not a bad show, but I started losing interest when they got to the 80's. Hard to believe no mention of the massacree as a protest song, although some interesting stuff from Arlo and Pete.

i agree Mikey....started off okay with Joe Hill and Pete and the Almanac singers....and some of the 60's stuff was okay.....guess i'm biased but i don't get how you can do a movie on protest music of the 60's and not mention Alice's Restaurant.....
...they did some lesser known performers in the beginning but then it went to all pop stars...was kinda expecting an ad selling a CD at the end...

now watching another PBS show (what a great week for PBS!):
The Sixties: The Years that Shaped a Generation, and they've had some interview time with Arlo shot fairly recently I imagine... interesting stuff, and of course there's the music (and some strains of Alice's in this one!)

Agree, Arnie. Loved it when Arlo gave us his description of Woodstock from the helicopter he was in. Thank God for PBS!

Did anyone tape the 60s show? My VCR doesn't work right and I'd love a copy for the Anthropology Club. Thanks in advance.
