"As in Arlo Guthrie's ``Alice's Restaurant,'' you could get ``anything you want,'' at the Nestl'e Folk Festival last weekend here in Newport. The two-day gathering brought together folk giants Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie, and Tom Paxton; a wide variety of solid but lesser-known craftsmen in various forms; and some wonderful new talent which proved that folk music keeps expanding its embrace to encompass whatever music wants to be included.

An unknown around here until her appearance at last year's festival, Alison Krauss is one of those up-and-coming performers who jolts audiences with her originality and talent. An accomplished 16-year-old fiddler and a vocalist with a sturdy, soaring voice, she moved easily from gospel to traditional to Beatles' music.

Arlo Guthrie was both the finale and the heart of the festival. He incorporates the best of political commitment, wry social commentary, laid-back humor, and the universal love that undergirds folk music. This being the 20th anniversary of "Alice's Restaurant," he presented a rare rendition of it. Because of the song's complexity and length, he says he's now doing it only every 10 years. He gave us a quickened 25-minute version. Then he said, ``If you want to end war, you've got to sing loud.'' He beamed as the audience - 6,000 strong - roared back the words."

That did happen to Arlo, in D.C., at a place called the Wax Museum in the early 80's. I know 'cause I was there when the guard told the owner that he'd done it. Haven't heard a song or a funny story about it yet, though.

This was the opening night of a then state-of-the-art 1000 seat nightclub -- biggest thing to hit Washington nightlife in years. Arlo was the opening night act -- the biggest draw anyone could think of. This was The Big Time -- except that some of the under 25 year olds were just being born when Alice's Restaurant first came out, and they didn't a clue who Arlo was, or what he looked like. Naturally, it was one of the 20 year olds who got posted at the front entrance, while someone who would recognize Arlo instantly was at the back, by the stage door.
Except Arlo didn't go to the stage entrance. He went to the front entrance.
The doorman came rushing up to the owner of the club, and said something along the lines of, "I saw this strange guy walking around the hall -- he was obviously a troublemaker, and there was no way I was going to let him in, or even hang around the premises. I told him to please leave, and he tells me that he's Arlo Guthrie and that it's his gig. Like I'm really going to believe him, right? He kept insisting though, and after holding him at the door for a half an hour or so, it turns out he really is Arlo Guthrie. I told him he could come in if he'd give me his autograph -- I was trying to make a joke out of the whole thing. He was real nice about it, and even me his autograph, too.

Ummmm...

Are you going to fire me for this?"

Lucky for this kid, Arlo didn't insist that he get fired, and the owner thought it was pretty funny. (As long as Arlo wasn't going to get upset about it, he wasn't.) The show went on without too many further hitches, and

It did serve to reaffirm one of my firmest convictions though, which is that the only people who ever have any trouble getting in to rock and roll clubs/shows/events are the people who are supposed to be there. <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/rolleyes.gif" width=15 height=15>

a couple of years back mark was helping arlo carry in guitars and other musical type stuff at a gig in earlville, ny. people were lined up for the gig when arlo and mark happened upon the front door with the stuff...the front door being the only way in. mark said it was pretty funny when people started moving aside for them as one of the crowd mentioned the "roadies" needed to get through. always wondered how many were surprised when one of the roadies appeared on stage. <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/wink.gif" width=15 height=15>

On the album by Cherish the Ladies, "Girls Won't Leave the Boys Alone", Arlo and Pete sing a song with Cherish the Ladies. It is one of CDNow's best of world music for 2001.

Back when I was 4, after Ike and Tina, I gravitated toward folk singer Arlo Guthrie, because I liked his
sing-songy "City of New Orleans," and not just because I lived in the Big Sleazy. The song has a lot
of nice harmonies and melody changes, and I enjoyed singing the line, "Pass the paper bag that
holds the bottle." I may have been a tot, but I knew exactly what was in bottles in paper bags. What
was in them smelled like the streets in the French Quarter, and Dad's beard on Rathskellar nights.
Besides, passing around bottles sounded fun and communal.

I liked "City of New Orleans" so much that I made Mom and Dad take me to see Guthrie in concert. I
also saw ZZ Top and B.B. King. But I don't remember either King or ZZ. I just remember singing,
"Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle," right after Mom woke me up and said: "Here's your song!
Wake up!"

Do you think it keeps "regular" time or celery time? Or most likely it keeps real time- so it's always <FONT size="5">now</FONT s>.

Just in case it becomes "then". I mean if that happened, you would want to know....right?

I guess you'd need TWO watches in that case, one where the time is always NOW, and the other where it's always THEN. I think I'm getting the hang of this celery time thing!
