My brother,a railroad man and dieing of cancer, asked me to play "City of New Orleans" at his funeral. I dug out Arlo's album to refresh my memory and started practicing. Before long I started playing more of my/his old LPs. Looking through the rack at Borders I picked up a CD of "Alice's Restaurant Revisited" and loved it so much I went out and bought a copy of the Arthur Penn movie version. I had stood in line to see the first showing of it back when. Remembered loving many scenes but being taken back by the underlying darkness of the film. Watching Arlo's commentary of the film was great. He explained many aspects of the film that had confused me over the years. Don't know why I never realized that Arlo and his friends weren't making the movie but Hollywood (and all that entails) made it. It often shocks me how blind I was then even as a "Hip" youth. Anyway took daughter number one back to college in Western Mass so I decided to drive through Stockbridge and over to the Church on the way home to Indiana. Guess I expected more historic markers/signage and route marking for the Garbage Trail like other historic sites,e.g. the "Freedom Trail" in Boston or the road from Lexington to Concord. Luckily he has many friends in the area and I got great directions everywhere. Found what he has done with the Church and got a wonderful tour of it. Saw that one of his daughters was playing the ukulele, my favorite instrument, in "Folk Uke" but no T-shirts in my size. My second daughter saw his daughter Sarah Lee playing with her husband Johnny Irion on the DePauw Campus(Indiana) and called me to tell me to go see them play in Bloomington(Indiana). They gave an impressive concert there and I got to talk to them and their daughter briefly afterwords. I was very impressed with Sarah Lee's poise and her understanding of sound and sound systems, pulling exactly what she wanted out, both with voice and guitar. Guess I just wanted to tell Arlo from what I have seen this summer, so far you have done a hell of a good job in life.
