Hello! I just purchased a sticker from ebay that was described as "Vintage Arlo Guthrie VW Volkswagon Microbus sticker decal MINT carefully stored". He says it has an Arlo Guthrie symbol on the side, but to me it just looks like a yellow circle with a red triangle inside of it. Has anyone seen this symbol or this sticker before? Does anyone know about the significance of the symbol? The sticker has paper over the top of it which is how it originally came that is why the colors are faint. If anyone has any information about this and can share I would appreciate it.

I just saw the symbol on one of the avatars you can pick through the website. I hope my question doesn't sound dumb. I don't know a whole hell of a lot about Arlo, just that I like his music and he's a total fox! LOL :) Anyone have any info on the symbol?

I think it started with Ray and Alice after they first bought the old Trinity Church in Great Barrington, Mass, now home to the Guthrie Foundation. The triangle represents the trinity - not sure about the circle. Maybe Arlo will weigh in and clarify this? I heard somewhere that it might have been the logo for their motorcross racing team?

Thanks for the information! I can't seem to find any information about the symbol anywhere else on the web.

It also looks identical to the symbol used by Alcoholics Anonymous, but I doubt there's a connection there

Watch the movie, "Alice's Restaurant". You'll see a motorcycle, hand silk-screened t-shirts and maybe a red VW microbus with that symbol on it, for the bike racing team. As far as real life...don't know; I wasn't there. I just know it was in the movie, and that the movie people made a lot of stuff up. I have no idea if that is or is not one of the made up things or if there is some truth there. I'm betting Arlo knows, tho.

I have only seen parts and pieces of that movie not all the way through, so I definitely have to check it out from start to finish and keep my eyes peeled for the symbol.

I think it stands for a Trinity Racing Association Ray had where they participated in motorcycle races like they did in the movie. I think I had one of those stickers. Not sure what happened to it tho.

Oh yeah! I just found this quote online!

"I played out my two weeks. Took a pair of hand-tooled boots and four square suits my mother gave me. Traded them for an amplifier, which I amplified some and put down as a down payment on a red VW microbus. Got me a Trinity Racing Association triangle from Ray and stuck it on the door. Now, if I can just get me a couple of hit records, I'll be all bailed out."

Copy and paste or click on the link below to hear it. You're right, thanks so much for the information!

WTF? The idiots who run this site obviously have no taste. If they classify "Alice's....." as a 'bad movie' --- they wouldn't know a good one if it fell on their empty heads!

Found this quote at imdb about the flick:

After discovering that the character "Officer Obie" was modeled after him, actual Stockbridge (Massachusetts) Sheriff William Obanhein demanded that he play the role himself. His reason: "If anyone is going to make a fool out of me, it might as well be me!"

mikey

I got this one on eBay, but it was the only one on there. You could maybe try to keep an eye out on eBay. Someone might post another one. Or you could probably have one custom made. Might be a little costly though.

It may be an intended, or unintended coincidence, but the Nazi's used the red triangle in their camps to identify communists, socialist, trade unionists, etc. Whether Ray co-opted this oppressive symbol for a new, liberated purpose, I don't know. But it could be so (just as the pink triangle originated by the Nazi's is now worn with pride by those who support gay rights).
