Throughout the decades, different people adapted the lyrics to reflect where they actually live. So, there's a Canadian version, a Mexican version etc... And it goes farther across the world where the spirit of the song remains, but the lyrics are taught differently in schools depending on location. We've always tried to do the song with the adapted lyrics if we were traveling to places far and away. Other verses have been added or subtracted depending on local sensibilities and traditions. We've sung a lot of them over the years, but it's the spirit of the song that seems to keep it going, changing and adapting to time and circumstance. Gotta love that. Having said that, Bedloe's Island makes a lot of sense, although almost no one would know it by that name these days, also probably back when the song was written. So it makes sense, but I've never seen it written anywhere in my dad's manuscripts or notes.

I agree with your statement Arlo. There are numerous versions of your Dad's song. You do not have to be American to sing that song. People from different countries sing that song and change the lyric to a state in West Canada to the Nova Scotia border. As long as an individual is proud of where they live letting freedom reign. I Google searched Bedloe's Island it is a New York Island called Liberty Island were the Statue of Liberty stands looking over the distance being proud of our country. I guess a New York island is any existing island with various names as people use their own lyrics and imagination.
