I like "Norman Always Knew". Altho I've never heard it live, or seen it on a setlist anywhere. I always thought the tune was okay, and the lyrics great!

I had a best friend once, named Norman Roach. ( born in 57 two days before me, so our Mom's were in the hospital together) We didn't meet officially, ( unless you consider crying together at 3 days old official )

Roachy's Dad died in a car accident when he was 12. At 13 he moved to my high school, and we became fast friends. My Dad, sorta took Norman under his wing, and he more or less lived with us, right up untill highschool graduation.... We remainded best friends, untill his death of a cocaine overdose, at the early age of 31. I miss my old friend, dearly, and that song about Rockwell, reminds me of Norm...

With a pipe in his hands, Norman always knew.

Okay. It's not really my favourite Arlo lyric; but that poem makes me smile every time.

Stone Mtn. as long as it makes yu smile everytime.. I guess arlo can bring the child out in all of us?

The song Norm always knew, makes me smile all the time too. I have nuthing but fond memorys of Norm. Sometimes I get sad, as I know there is a finite # of xmas cards his mother can send me.

Maybe this is a good thing, it's not on any setlist. I don't always like a song that makes me cry.... I believe if I heard it live, I would break down in tears. Even theryapy, can't help sometimes, in losing a best friend. Expecially to freaked up reasons for dying. and by saying freaking i'm being kind. Or generous.

My wife & I get teary eyed when Arlo sings Ocean Crossing.... That's a good thing.....

Seeing I'm new to Arlo's music I'm sure there will be many new favorite lyrics in my future. I tend to be the sappy type . So often the love songs or broken hearted love songs touch me

But right now I think that "Someday" might be my favorite. As I listen to the song it makes me think of those that have passed on and knowing that in the Here After I will see them all again.

Love the whole thing but this part cracks me up every time.

Or if I fly on the airplanes, I could fly half fare because I'm 12
to 22. And they gotta pay the full fare. But the thing is that
when you pay the full fare, you have to get on the airplane
first, so that they know how many seats are left over for the
half fare kids. Right? And sometimes there aren't any seats
left over, and sometimes there are, but that doesn't mean that
you have to go.

Suppose that he gets on and fills up the last seat, so you can't
get on. Then he gets off then you can get on. What's he gonna
do?

The late Steve Goodman wrote that. And Arlo made it a classic.

If you could only see, I know you would agree, there ain't no where else to be like Massachusetts. A massive house upon the hill, that keeps us from the chill, and by the grace of God we will be in Massachusetts. Or another- Oh I miss the swinging front porch banjo nights, when friends come buy to pass the time of day, and the wind that chills The Berkshires in the nights, heading east from Massachusetts towards the bay.

I would have to say "City of New Orleans" is my favorite song sung by Arlo, I know he did not write it but I love it!! To me it is so poignant, so heart-tugging, it combines love of our country with nostalgia, loss and the passing of time. Also the "characters" in the song, I love the illustration of humanity . The combination of the instruments, Arlo's wonderful voice and the lyrics make it a wonderful song and one of my all time faves! <3
