I like the idea of expanding borders and taxing stuff. Just think how fun it would be to be able to travel anywhere and not have to worry about border checks. Maybe more of us would be able to see how similar we all are... I know I know quit floating around and back to reality.

There are many honest people world wide looking for an opportunity to come here. What is happening here now is more of a socialistic program where the farmers are paying token wages while the honest tax payers are picking up the tab for their taxes, medical and all of the other social services they require.

I wouldn't let the snooty people bother me. They never seemed to bother my father.

Lots of industrialized countries have invested in mechanized equipment for farming. Many here have also. The ones that seem to be getting the press are the ones that prefer subsidized slave labor.

28,000,000 illegal aliens here and the farmers can't seem to find enough suitable to work for them? I don't think more is the answer. Not even one percent of them work in agriculture now.


The people I used to see come here legally to help were treated the same as the rest of us. They paid their taxes, rent, food, medical and worked shoulder to shoulder with the rest of us. We all got ripped off together.

It varies--in New Mexico, they're managing better, thanks to Gov. Richardson. But in Texas, it's not like the 1970s. Illegal immigrants aren't just working for farmers; that's the least of it--they are just about the only ones working in restaurants as cooks, waiters, etc., working on highway construction crews, commercial and housing construction crews, landscaping crews, driving local delivery trucks, taxi drivers, domestic workers, etc., etc. It's a real problem for U.S. citizens who don't have job skills higher than those jobs, who have even very good construction job skills, or who are just out of high school and not college-bound. They can't live on the low wages the immigrants will work for (unless they are willing to live with several large families in one rental house, with no medical or auto insurance, etc., etc.), so they don't get the jobs. (They also don't get the jobs because you now have to be Spanish/English bilingual to get the service jobs--and the English doesn't have to be very understandable.) The immigrants are primarily Mexican. There are a few Central Americans, but the ones who get through have tales of being attacked in Mexico because they're coming here to take jobs away from Mexicans.

I don't fault the immigrants for this mess, they are just trying to live and they can't get jobs even close to a living wage in Mexico. I do fault the employers, our state and federal governments, and the Mexican government. And they don't care what we think.

Why would Woody think? Who can guess? The big "They" have managed once again to create a situation where one working-class group's existence is threatened by another working-class group's existence. There's no universally fair solution to be found. I'm sure that in a generation or two it will all have worked out, but the interim isn't going to be pretty.

Mexicans can swim, and so can mooses, so what's the point?
Will there be ramparts guarding these moats with guys in armor ready to spill kettles of boiling oil on those breaching the moats?

I believe the suggestion included sea monsters and, perhaps, alligators.

Will that be satisfactory to achieve the goal? If not we're pretty good at building infallible systems. (witness the 2000 election in Florida, the ongoing redemption of Iraq, the capture of Osama bin Laden,...). So long as we don't let any of them illegals work on it, we should be able to find a way.
