I see Arlo is to play Carnegie Hall tomorrow. Brings back one of my favorite concert memories, and I have many, been a Dead Head for 32 years. Back in the late 80's Arlo played Carnegie Hall, a commemorative concert for Woody. My younger brother and I planned to get tickets at the door, but he had announced he was going to play Alice's Restaurant and the concert sold out that day. We had a little commiseration with other fans that would have been there anyway, grumbling at the Alice-only fans. But when my brother and I turned the corner there was an open doorway to a service entrance. We walked in and there was a security guard there who took one look at our hippie clothes and nodded up the stairs. We ran up several flights and through a door and we were in the back of Carnegie Hall. The place is huge. We stumbled upon an orchestra practicing below us while the concert was going on. We could hear it faintly and followed the sound until we got to right back stage in a stairwell that opened to some rooms. I guessed dressing rooms. I think we were stage left and we could hear it perfectly. Just as we got there he started Alice's Restaurant and we sat on the stairs and listened. A security guard came up and took a double-take but he stayed with us and listened along, an Alice's Restaurant Movement right there behind the stage as Arlo sang it. HAA. But before the end of the song, it does go on, the guard's boss showed up and did not look pleased. We said, "thank you officer, we'll be on our way" and took off down the stairs and out the building. Missed the concert but got the memory. Thanks, Arlo. When you play in Tucson, if you have some time check out Bisbee, about an hour and a half south. It'll bring you back. We're still stuck in the 70's and you'd be incognito: just another aging long-hair in town. peace, eliza
