This proverbial cat was raised in Greenwich Village. His dad was a noted classical harmonica player and his mom was a writer for radio shows. "They were both pretty much 'hip to the jive'", smiles Sebastian. John grew up in a musical, artsy home often visited by family friends such as Burl Ives and Woody Guthrie.
"I remember that at that time, you could go 3 or 4 blocks in any direction and find guitar greats ranging from Lightnin' Hopkins to Mississippi John Hurt playing in the clubs. I was this neighborhood kid following these legends around, carrying their guitars. It was a magical time."
You can hear John Sebastian playing his harmonica as he joins Arlo Guthrie, Ramblin' Jack Elliott & others on Rick Robbins "Walkin' Down The Line" CD on the Seeds Of Man Records label. John is also on Rick's latest CD release, "Don't Deny My Name" with Rory Block.

I'm a little late because it was last week sometime, but Arthur Penn, the director of such great films as "Alice's Restaurant", "Bonnie and Clyde" and "Little Big Man" turned 80.

She would have turned 84 today.

Commemorating the 85<FONT size="1">th</FONT s> birthday anniversary of Marjorie Guthrie on this day, October 6, 2002. Looking down from Heaven, seeing Arlo in a tux, playing with a symphony orchestra, has to make her proud, hearing how he has incorporated the kind of music she loved so much (music from the original long-hair bands), with his own style of music.
