Hey Sparky -- you beat me to it!!! I remember that very cold December day 25 years ago and I had a very hard time believing the news. To this day, I still have to ask myself ... WHY?? It was a very sad day.

My mom lived in New York 25 years ago. Only like a half-mile or so away, I think. You can imagine she remembers it purdy well...

At work today the college station was playing all John Lennon tunes......I remember that day of his death and all radio stations were playing Beatles songs all day long and also that same day my great-grandfather passed away (age 92) and what a hard period it was for me I loved my great-grandfather very much and we even shared the same birthday together

I also remember John Lennon had a huge comeback hit with "Just Like Starting Over" I bought the Double Fantasy album and played it over and over simutaneously because it was the best record he ever put out and was devastated. His legacy lives on....

I found it hard to believe its been 25 years,I remember too how hard it was to believe when John was fatally shot outside his home in the Dakota.
I recall myself and friends gathering together to share our grief that night,lighting candles and sharing tears.We thought it had to be a mad man to kill a peaceful man like John Lennon,it turned out we were right,no reason,no motive.Just a man with a sick mind and a gun
Man if he was here now and hooked up with folk like Arlo or Bono I,d bet he,d sing real loud to end war and stuff.

I found out, like a lot of people I know, from Howard Cosell. I was a 1st-year law student who decided to take a short break from my studies & tuned into Monday Night Football. Almost as soon as I switched the game on, Cosell made the announcement.

When I heard the news, I didn't call anybody or go attend a vigil or anything like that. My main hang-out back then was a punk rock club, & the punkers probably just shrugged at the news; they didn't care about any music that happened before 1977. Besides, I had a ton of studying to do & the professors weren't gonna be hip to the fact that John was killed & his fans might be distracted from their studies.

Lo & behold, the next morning this stuffed shirt law professor gets in front of the class & sez, "John Lennon was killed last night." A few gasps around the room, from studious types who didn't even take a break to turn on the game. He continued, "I liked the Beatles' music a lot. It was nice. There were a lot of good melodies there if you dug deep below the noise."

The night after John died, I was watching the Tomorrow Show when they decided to rerun the interview that Tom Snyder did with on John on 4/28/75, believed to be the last TV interview that John ever did. There was no such thing as a VCR in those days, but I quickly grabbed a tape recorder & a cheap tape & put it next to the TV. I listen to it at about this time every year, & I never fail to laugh out loud at the exchange that closes the interview:

Snyder: You've been a very low-key and mild-mannered guest on this program and yet I've heard you described as an egomaniac and I'm having trouble understanding that description of you vis-à-vis the way you've been during this hour we've spent together. Why would you be called that?

Lennon: Because one gets a reputation, you know, from one thing or another, whether it's true or false. If being an egomaniac means I believe in what I do or in my art or in my music, in that respect you can call me that, you know. I believe in what I do. And I'll say it. Otherwise this is pretty much me--apart from being on TV, you know.

Snyder: Well, you're one of the nicest egomaniacs I've ever met.

Lennon: Well, so are you, Tom!
