The show's remainder was carried by outstanding vocal
performances. Cassandra Wilson first sang Antonio Carlos
Jobim's "Agua de Marco" (Waters of March), a selection
from her forthcoming Blue Note release. Her muddy tone
and off-kilter rhythms imbued the classic bossa nova with
the sound of the Mississippi delta.

She followed with the evening's highlight, her version of
Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land."
Regina Carter's violin and Fleck's banjo added to the tune's
lush, pastoral mood.

The piece was suggested by writer/producer Jeff Levenson,
a JAI Executive Committee member, who said, "I wanted
an alternative anthem in response to Sept. 11. I was
interested in presenting a different take on patriotism. We
found an additional three stanzas that are rarely performed.
They underscore the rights of individuals within our nation.
It felt like an archeological find, and I loved the idea that
Cassandra wanted to sing it."
