ZoWie and I were swapping songs, and after we got done with McCartney and Wings "Venus and Mars" we started singing songs by Woody, of course! After we'd gone through 1913 Massacree, we started discussing the events that led up to the song - and then, I started doing a search.

I found some pretty interesting sites, based on the events which inspired one of Woody's most touching songs.

Anybody who likes stories of early labor struggles can't go wrong by reading "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn or listening to the Utah Phillips CD's, "Fellow Workers" (with Ani DiFranco) or "The Long Memory" (with Rosalie Sorrels). None of these mention the 1913 Calumet, MI copper strike, however. But, for example, the Spokane free speech fight & the Lawrence, Massachusetts textile strike are great stories.
