Yesterday I saw a book that I just HAD to have--Jim Hightower's latest: Thieves in High Places: They've Stolen Our Country and It's Time to Take It Back. I'll get started on it, probably this weekend. If it's as good as I'm expecting, I'll be nominating it for a Blunderite Book Club session or two. Anyone else have it?

hmmmm... I was just finished with my last book and looking for something interesting... I'll see if my library has it!

I just reserved a copy--we don't have it in yet, but there is a record for it so when the Library gets their copy I'll be second in line for it. (Wonder who is before me?) I'll let you know if I actually have time to read it. I am taking a YA (Young Adult) class at school this semester and I have 22 books to read for that--fortunately they are teen books and fairly quick--now I just have to remember what I read!! <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/eek.gif" width=15 height=15>

Leave it to a Texan to think about book clubs in the middle of a heat wave!!! Up north Book clubs are for something to keep us inside, and eliviate boredom. NTM: keep our asses in out of the cold, and the unemployment rate jumps 10 fold in winter months. NOT THAT I'm making excuse's or nuthin..... (did I leave out we're sparce on air conditioning as we only use them 2 months out of the yr)???? (man that's a poor excuse, specially reading it on paper. I must be cheap)

* I saw an interview with the author of said book, and to me it sounds like a great read. I loved the guys ideas, on how we are getting ripped off, and in the smallest of life's pleasures. It made sence listening to him rant about some issues...

#1. Was the child helmet law in most states. Most of us are of age where we can remember NOT wearing a helmet to do such a simple task as riding a bike. For Christ sake, back then if one dared, he'd be taken for an epileptic, rather than being safe. <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/eek.gif" width=15 height=15> stigma or not

#2. Wearing seat belts in your car. IT"S A LAW with hefty fines. This should be our God given right to be brain-dead, after being hit by a drunk driver. Not the Govt. to decide. Yes?

#3. Well read the book. It's full of lifes lil antidotes, on where things are laws, when they should be just common sence choices. Choices we make on our own, & not mandated by Govt. agencys!!!!

#4. Safe sex. Well I would have to agree with that one for sure. & I'm pretty sure that one didn't make the book. But the one's you'll read, just might hit home.

I don't have it yet. So many books to buy this fall. If I can't get them all, at least I know what my Christmas list will look like. Next month Molly Ivin's Bushwacked should be coming out. Last night I got Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them - A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right. That wasn't supposed to be out until October, but Penquin moved up the publishing date to coincide with the lawsuit Fox was bringing. Good thing they were quick about it because the suit was thrown out immediately that it got in front of a judge. This weekend is my sister's birthday, so we figured we'd celebrate at Border's and I got us each a copy of the book so we could purchase on the first official day.

apropos of nuthin', a little while ago on some other thread here, I quoted one of the opening lines of On The Road... and realized how long it's been... so I picked up a nice lookin' Penguin edition of this classic, and I'm back in the thick of the kerouac beat with Dean and Sal!

Ceashel: I'm glad that you saw thru my good natured humor. Sometimes, I think myself too bold, and was worried you might think my post was a slam? All in good fun. Wish me luck for November. Like all things, plans are subject to change. Hopefully this will be the yr!

Our library doesn't have the Hightower book yet, but as soon as I can get my hands on a copy I'll make my way through it. Let me know when there's a meeting of the BBC!

Just finished it last night. I definitely nominate Thieves in High Places for the BBC. Parts of it are a little hard to get through, because Hightower has done his homework, and it's full of things that made me so MAD<img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/reddevil.gif" width=16 height=16>!!! But it's not a long whine; it's full of humor and hope, too.
