I thought we could use a thread by this name.

In todays paper:

Country Joe McDonald is being sued for allegedly stealing the tune from his song " I feel like I'm fixin' to die rag" from a 1926 song by famed jazz trombonist Kid Ory. Ory's daughter, Babette Ory filed the lawsuit last month and claimed that Country Joe stole the tune from her father's "Muscrat Ramble".Under copyright law she may seek damages for performances of the song only in the past three years. Damages for intentional infringment can be up to $150,000. for EACH performance.

Can you believe this shit?!?!

Kinda makes you hope that Stephen Foster doesn't look up Arlo....huh? Image

the real amazing shit, is that country joe put the song out over 33 years ago, and did numerous takes on it, one of which probably got seen and heard by millions in Woodstock! So where was Ms. Ory all that time, and up till now?? Huh?? Jeez! even arlo figured out his "folk processing" sooner than that!!!!
(and that's country joe's defense i'm sure!!!)

I think Dave was too polite when he named Controversial Topics. It's controversial when we start flaming each other. I can't see that happening over this one. We've had plenty of controversial stuff in topical. We even get pissed off in topical. If we're not so mad we just get personal and can't remember the subject, it's probably just topical. Even though Larry did say "Poppycock" in the other thread, I don't think that's quite flame war yet.

I read that on the folk music newsgroup. It'sd a shame as that's a good song. Good luck Country Joe! Pete Seeger does a killer version of it live in concert At Arlo & Pete shows. Image
