Thank you for those of you who read about James Nachwey, and his TED award. He was indeed given a large sum of money for winning, but better , he was granted one wish : they would help him make an impact on the world as he saw the need. This is his story and here is his wish. Be forewarned , it is Africa health at its absolute worse! I am going to go there and help them, someday !

For those who may not be familar, XDRTB is disease caused by deadly strains of tuberculosis that are multiply resistant to antimycobial drugs. It's a death sentence.

What do you guys think of this world health issue, on TED recognizing this photographer, on ways to help, what to do?

i think there are a 5h1t load of health issues (physical mental you name it for instance) that need addressing worldwide and we humans are waisting precious resources and potential and technology and...and... (i am an idiot so parden my lack of eloquence etc) on wars and 5h1t! if we hoo-mons could get our shit together maybe we could straighten out some shit???

Thank you so much, MG. Another value here is the networking--I learn so much here that I didn't know about.

With the world economy in a pickle, so to speak, and headed for the cliff, it's going to be more important than ever to make or keep people aware of this and the other supercritical issues like it. This is the very kind of effort that without massive support gets cut first in an economic crisis, even though it needs to be first in line.

I think this is a stunning memorial to the stupidity of man! The health crisis that has been so incredbly well documented is the result of a combination of two opposing elements, isolationist capitalism and corporate-based greed seasoned with an ad hoc mixture of poorly coordinated "humane" efforts. (well you asked what I thought) The crisis is a failure in building stable infrastructures in the areas of the world where these diseases are killing so many! When I say poorly coordinated ad hoc humane efforts, I really mean poorly coordinated ad hoc efforts (I am not attacking those who wanted to help and tried to help but, as you know MG, XDRTB is the result of too many attempts to eradicate TB without adequate support to finish the job). I hate to make the analogy to war but it is like God said to Joshua (and I am paraphrasing here), if you don't completely eradicate the Canaanites, you will create a race of really really really crafty pissed-off survivors. It was just 20 years ago people were talking of TB as if it were the next small pox? An ancient curse destroyed by modern medicine! The failure was lack of adequate economic support and foresight at a critical moment in history! The eradication of a bacterium that causes chronic debilitating disease (and obviously an acute form under epidemic conditions per these photographs) requires far greater persistance than that of an acute viral infection.

What can we do? Sort and cull the victims into isolation (as we are doing by isolating the peoples in these regions of the world as much as possible) treat the immediate causes until this wave subsides and try again to provide the infrastructure that will allow us to keep this from happening again which realistically means developing stable governments and economies where these people live that can support and sustain these infrastructures. That means we have to start tearing down artificial barriers and walls of religion and tribalism and of despotism and greed. And I am not just talking about in Africa or Siberia or Asia. I am talking about America and Europe and the Middle East as well! We spend too much time pissing on each other to adequately address the real problems in the world!

You can't patch a ruptured Aorta with a band aide!
