Post subject: GREAT FOR THE YOUNG ONES
PostPosted: Wed Dec 12, 2007 11:30 pm

A study published by the American Lung Association has found that Indian children living in England whose diet consisted largely of foods from their native country were less likely to have symptoms of asthma and allergy than Indian youngsters who ate a primarily Western diet.
The researchers say they cannot be certain whether the Indian Food itself was responsible for the protective effect or whether children whose families eat mostly Indian Food also have other lifestyle factors that protect against asthma. But study co-author Dr. John Britton noted that the average Indian diet tends to be healthier than the average Western diet, which he said might help explain the findings.
Indian Food tend to contain more vegetables, less meat and fewer additives and packaged and processed foods than the traditional British diet, said Dr. Britton, of the Division of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Nottingham in England. The findings were similar for children eating vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets.
The authentic Indian Food has a tradition of being a subtly flavoured exotic food with taste that lingers and helps you feel more comfortable and happier. They follow a strict regiment in combinations. Like meat always goes with cardamom, cinnamon and turmeric or fish with cocum unless substituted with an alternative spice. Each vegetable too has its own combination which is never violated by a genuine Indian cook. These combinations bring out the best in the ingredients by way of taste and benefits.
It is therefore very beneficial for the young ones. If fed on this cuisine regularly they build up resistance and are able to lead a better and healthier life.

The spices themselves can be part of the reason those who eat traditional Indian diets are healthier. Turmeric, for instance, has anti-cancer properties, is good for arthritis, and may help prevent Alzheimers.

It's a great way to eat...very healthy, unless you're diabetic. The Indian diet has a lot of hidden carbs that are not easily turned into blood sugar levels that are normal...beans, rice, lentils, potatoes, nan bread and a bunch of other stuff contain lots of carbs...which diabetics have to severely limit.
On the other hand..cinnamon does lower blood glucose levels.

Sue's right on the cinnamon. I had no idea about the Indian food. I like it but haven't had it in along while. Could go for some again...

Maybe it's genetic? Or a combination of things (nature/nurture). Cinnamon triggers my asthma.

Might be an allergy... My son-in-law is so allergic to cinnamon that he can't go shopping at Christmastime because of all the cinnamon scented decorations. (My daughter says 'thank goodness for online shopping")

I think we are all alergic to life in some way, since none of us are getting out alive. I think it was Warren Zevon that noted " Life will kill you". In the meantime, I'm just gunna live and continue to eat stuff that is not good for me. :D

yeah Sue your right, and the protein from the beans,a little fat from ghee or meat plus the spices, will counteract the high GI (makes me think of someone in army fatigues sucking on a reefer) in the carbs.

Trouble is the evil capitalists are pushing Canola and other evil oils into these countries so the health of those people will deteriorate.
