Who says there's little hope for the little guy? I just got an offer from some lady in Africa from a place I never heard of offering me half of 6 million dollars and all I have to do to get it is front like 20 or 30 thousand dollars for paperwork and stuff! Finally! The little guy can get the same kind of deals as Haliburton and Blackwater!

President Bush has no problem taking free government health care for himself and his family. It's just when children get health care that he gets upset. Not that he will veto it in public, you understand.

It makes sense if you think about, if them little poor kids get to grow up, chances are they will become democrats, and he sure don't need more of them! I'll bet Rove had a hand in this.......

folks are still fighting this veto.... it is unpardonable, horrendous and has no reason... it's not even the poorest families that are hurt as many still are eligible for Medicaid (if that lasts).....it's the working class families that lose the chance to get some health care for their kids.... (people at 300% above the federal poverty level...which is i think around $20,500 now for a family of 4....sorry i can't do the math...)...

if you have an ounce of energy....please join some group and fight with us.... an incredibly important program...in a very difficult time...the Senate has enough votes to override the veto.. the House is about 20 votes short.... a small chance... but a chance....

Hope I didn't upset anyone posting that. I got it from a diabetes list & thought it was interesting cuz I had heard all this stuff about how good the health care was in Canada & then just read otherwise. Sure hope this stuff isn't true & they do have good healthcare there...

I don't know what the answer is but I know the innner workings of the largest for profit health care agency in the world and the stuff that goes on would make the 1000.00 bolt the army just bought seem trite (it's the for profit thing that makes it all get ugly....as usual) Perhaps the only thing I would agree with "W" about (sorry to any lawyers out there) is the need for tort reform. Some physicians pay up to 1,000,000.00 a year in malpractice premiums. Who does the expense get passed on to ?

The answer is probably a single payer system with progressive taxation to pay for it. However, we won't be getting that for a long, long time and it probably would be a hell of a clusterf*ck to try to get it done all at once anyway. For the nearer future, all the Democratic candidates are offering plans that will give us some real movement toward universal healthcare and that's a start. At the moment, the percentage of non-elderly uninsured has reached 17.5% in this country.

Harry and Louise aren't going to be able to get around that fact so easily this time around. The elderly, of course, have their own problems coping with donut holes, paying for Medigap coverage and and so forth and even having Medicare doesn't guarantee you can afford your expenses.

Massachusetts has made a mistake on their new Insurence Law. They already have Masshealth if you make under about $1100.00 I fell off of it on ssdi though I still have Medicare. Medicare's drug plan is nickle and diming me to death though.

I've heard that the health care in Canada isn't so good, from some Canadians I know. Makes me wonder if some people I used to know would be alive today if they'd had a different kind of health care over there.

I think it varies just as much as it does here. I know a Canadian family who say they get excellent health care and I know others who don't. But there it has more, I think, to do with where you live/where you go for health care, and here it's how much money you have. (Which can be related.)

I don't know a whole lot of Canadians, but when I meet one, I always ask. None of the Canadians I've spoken to would trade places with us, regardless of whether they're totally happy with their system or not.

Oh--I didn't mean to imply that the Canadians who aren't as happy with their healthcare system would trade--they think our system is medieval at best. Most of their problems seem to be about how long it takes to get noncritical/elective things done. They wonder why we don't rise up in mass protest. I wonder that myself...

We might be getting about as close to that as we've ever been on that issue. The situation is now intolerable for enough people that it's approaching critical mass. The reason we haven't before this is because of pure propaganda, I think.
