Hey I noticed skin color trumps genitalia in politics. The moderator in VP debate is being accused of partisonship and it seems to be race and not vagina that is the concern!

I suspect you're right...there's people that would rather see a woman VP with a caucasian president than an African American in the White House...and his qualifications, personal merit and experience or the rottenness of the other candidate makes no difference, because they can't get past the color to see the person and the individual they are.

Re: abortion. I believe in life. I brought two kids into this world. I also believe in birth control, being responsible for one's behavior, planned families, sex education and the right for kids to be well cared for. While I would not personally choose to have an abortion, I see a need for them to be available to any woman who has made that choice.

Thanks for the info. Had no idea some liberals are pro-life. I do believe ya'll are patriotic. Ya'll care alot about your country. It bugs me when I hear folks saying people like hippies are unpatriotic. It's just we all have different viewpoints.

I must say, in the area of telivsion politicin', Obama has definitely pushed the envelop and changed campagn ad methodology forever while the McCain ads are rehashed Reagen Slogans with a new face at the end! Obama has created a new age fireside chat type ad with encourgement to check it out on the internet! It amazes me that anyone would actually buy that scare tactic crap about what the Democrats would do to the economy given the current situation! How much worse could it possibly get?

The people who support Obama-like rhetoric seem to be issue oriented while the people who tend to support McCain are agenda oriented. The Obama camp still has not developed an agenda style platform (hey I am an issue oriented person myself, it is just politics). I think, based on how he presents his views and his obvious intellect, Obama will possibly be able to create a little of that agenda backing that frankly, Bill Clinton ignored and actually distanced himself from the traditional Democratic agenda of the times, just to get himself elected! A new modernized alternative to the right wing agenda and muckrackers!

Thank you for that understanding and those kind words. That's why we need to talk about real issues and not use labels. To some people, liberal means one thing. To me, put simply, it means someone who takes to heart what they learned (from their parents or their religion or just life) about taking care of each other--we're all in this together, so we make sure we all have our basic needs and can get along together peacefully. Besides being the right thing to do (love thy neighbor ...), it's also in our best interest for everyone else to have what they need--then they don't come trying to take ours. And yes, I'm pro-life much as PSB outlined, but per the example used in the media this week, if a 15-year-old girl is raped by her father, I believe she should be able to choose what to do.

I didn't have kids, but through the grace of some dear friends, there are a couple of young people who may take a little bit of me into the future in their hearts when I'm gone, and I want the best possible world for them. To me, being a pro-life liberal also means having more of a long-term plan for future generations and not just wanting the best for ourselves. I think that's very much in line with what Judaism and Islam and Jesus (etc.) taught. But it seems to me that conservatives don't think that we should be stewards of the Earth, but that it's right and proper that big companies can take our resources and wreck the environment, leaving a broken world with dirty air, dirty water, barren hills where forests stood, leaving a poisoned wasteland for future generations, in the name of Profit. Cheryl, I know that you have a kind heart, yet you keep calling youself a conservative. I can't understand how anyone who follows the man who threw the money-changers out of the temple could be on the side of big business and profit and greed. Help me here--is the label "conservative" getting in the way of my understanding you? What do you think about this?

Not really sure. But I've come across a few folksies who are conservative. Our churches preacher is a conservative & yet he likes Arlo. A minority I know lol...

Cheryl, thanks for posting more of your thoughts.... we actually need some conservative viewpoint around here sometimes.... keeps good discussions going and most often we find out we agree way more than we might guess without talking...

I agree with Shelley that Obama is a moderate.... at least now.... he is short of being liberal and even shorter of being progressive... labels are so tricky, eh?....maybe i shouldn't use them at all anymore.... everyone is who they are.. .and that's my party... whatever its name is... alot of my beliefs are left of liberal....sometimes so left they are almost conservative.... (it's actually a circle I think)....

Like Sue, I couldn't have an abortion either.... but I don't think that it ought to be a government decision... I can't be against someone having an abortion, and i can't be against folks havin 12 kids... to me that's what America is about...

Back to our topic, indeed. It seems that Obama/Biden have pulled way ahead in the polls in three key states, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and (that's right) Florida. I'm really starting to get a good feeling about this election, but I have to say I got the same feeling in '00 and '04, and you all know what happened.

Nice to read the civil posts in here debating "conservativism or conservationism" (two different things), and I too respect Cheryl (and Dave Downin) for not being afraid to share their views with us. Speaking of Dave, he's been strangely silent for this election. Do you think he's resigned to a defeat?
