Hey Cheryl... if you think Peter Tork would be a good president, you can do a write-in vote... you can vote for anyone you want to, even if they aren't on the ballot!

I'd heard you could do that. Since he probably wouldn't win, I won't write him in but instead vote for Dubya as I had planned.

Cheryl, personally, if I were planning to vote for Dubya, I'd probably at this point write in Tork... a much better bet

Larry, I don't mean to speak for Cheryl, but I think there is a huge problem in this country centering on mistrust of intellectual, science-minded, deliberative leaders in favor of "average Joes", "people of faith", and "cowboys who shoot from the hip first and ask questions later". I am old enough to remember this first coming up with Adlai Stevenson vs. Eisenhower.

Unless and until America learns to trust its
most educated leaders, we are possibly doomed to a long line of Bush clones.

The reason I'm for Dubya is he seems like a good man, he has deep faith in God & stands for alot of the moral stuff I am for. I'd love for the Wizard to jump in here & share his views since he's a conservative too...

I'm not talking about Cheryl here, either, just speaking generally, but it does seem that a lot of religious groups are for Bush, & I don't understand it. We had a guest priest at our (Catholic) church a few weeks ago, & in his sermon he mentioned that there were 2 presidential candidates, one Catholic, one not, yet the one who was not is more "up" on Catholic doctine that the one who is. I wanted to argue with him after mass, but my family said to let it go.

Somehow, to a lot of religious groups the commandment "Thou shalt not kill" has come to mean "Thou shalt not commit abortion" & somehow little things like war & capital punishment don't count. Not only has Bush started an unnecessary war for his buddies at Halliburton & Bechtel Construction, but during this term as governor there was a high number of capital punishments in Texas. (I don't have my facts handy---don't know if Bush executed more prisoners than any governor in American history or not, but if he didn't he was right up there.) As governor, the most time he ever spent even reviewing a death penalty case was 15 minutes.

This is not a man who's "up" on Catholic (or Christian) doctrine. I went to Catholic schools as a kid, & I can tell you all that I was taught that "thou shalt not kill" is a prohibition on all killing, not just abortion.

I saw a interview on Good Morning America the other day with that guy who's been taking photos of Kerry for many years. Nam, fighting for peoples rights, with John Lennon at a anti-war rally etc. Then I thought back over what Dubya was doing over the same period of time.......Just doesn't measure up does he.
And I don't like the way he and Cheney use the old Fire and Brimstone to scare people either!!!!
People here in OZ who thought I was strange, a Saddam supporter, against the troops etc. at the beginning of all the Iraq stuff because of what I said are changing their minds after seeing Fahirenheight 9/11 and stuff so there is lots of hope!!( Pitty they can't vote over there! Though our election for Prime Minister is on here next Saturday so mabey this will help to oust Little Johnnie, Dubya's pal in the Coaliton of the Willing. No more Bar B Que with W. at the ranch then!! I'll let you know!!)

Theologian Joseph Martos has written a book comparing Bush's actions to what is mandated by the Scriptures & concludes that Bush is actually woefully deficient as a man of religion. Here's a link to one book review.

The Christian Right is hanging on, hoping that Bush will nominate some rightwing justices to the USSC. That's their only hope, because they have not got one thing on their agenda from this administration. The Christian Right (or the American Taliban as they're so aptly called) wanted to limit gay rights. Well, now instead of debating employment discrimination, we're debating gay marriage. A ban on a type of abortion that's virtually never performed was put in place and Roe v Wade hasn't been touched. Drug use, adultery and sexually transmitted disease continue to present the same kinds of problem as ever, and they're on the rise among rightwing talk show hosts. Official prayer in public schools is still not legal. Judge Moore got his 10 Commandments kicked out of the courthouse.

All the Christian Right has gotten from this administration is lip service and that's all it's going to get. Someone might overturn Roe v. Wade someday. I don't know. All that'll do , though, is turn it back to the states, some of which were already legalizing abortion before the Supreme Court ruled on it. Meanwhile, the rich get a whole lot richer and the Christian Right gets to go to Iraq, or maybe work at Walmart for 7 bucks an hour.

Trouble is, the Christian Right has nowhere else to go as long as their agenda is to impose their values on the rest of us. They're providing the fuel for the Republican Party, but I think they're being taken for a different kind of ride.

Yeah, something scarey has happened here! There is a new party called Famiy First and they say they are not affiliated with any religious base, but their leader was pastor in one of the big Evangelistic churches for 30 years or so. Now Johnnie has promised them some stuff if they give him their preferences!!
The Greens are giving their preferences to Labour and I think more people will vote for the Greens than Family First even though Johnnies Deputy has labeled the Greens WATERMELONS (Green on the outside and red inside) and AVOCADOES (soft and squishy on the outside and nuts on the inside)Australia is a strongly Secular country these days.
Did you know that Johnnies right wing Conservative party here are called the Liberal Party!!!
THe opposition, and who Johnnie is up against, is Labour (to the left of centre)
Mark Lathum is their leader and hopefully the new P.M.
Our Democrats are more left than Labour but, a much smaller party, and the Greens are the scarey radical left. THeir leader Bob Brown is the one who got up and had something to say to W., in Parliment, when he was here last year, about the Quantanamo (Spelling?) Bay detainees, which was his Democratic right but he was silenced and he and his deputy Kery Nettle were bodily jostled away from W. by members of the Liberal Party when they tried to speak to him!!!!

pat, that's an interesting viewpoint on the Christian right, and one I hadn't really considered. Yes, they are pulling the Republican sled like a bunch of dogs and being thrown scraps for their efforts so far.

I think, however, that we should not let our guard down; the dogs might stage an uprising for all the food someday. Also, it's different on the local level. Down here, the American Taliban (I love that) are closing adult bookstores, lobbying against casinos, and removing books from library shelves.
