I suspect that Obama will win in October simply because of domestic issues and the lack of attention the Mr. Bush (I wouldn't dignify him by calling him president) has paid little attention to domestic issues here at home. His country is falling apart at the seems and he is doing nothing about it. Obama has not completely won me over just yet but if I do anything I will vote Democrat because simply I feel that they are our only hope in fixing this economy. It's just plain history. FDR fixed the econimy after a republican, Clinton fixed the economy after a republican administration, I believe it could happen again with the next Democratic president whom ever it may be. The only problem is that I believe that it will take longer than four years to fix all the wrongs of the past eight years.

One of the many reasons why I've liked Obama's message is that he uses the word "We" quite often, not "I". I believe the people of America can work together for good if led by someone with a "We" attitude.

I wish people could see beyond color, see, perhaps through different eyes the possible reasons-based on tragic history-the why behind the Rev. message (which we only heard a small inflammatory piece of) and, again, the reason why Michelle Obama made her statement about being proud of her country for the first time. I, for one, never saw the negative in either of those controversies yet white middle America (which so many of us belong to) is having hissy fits over it. I think they need to read their history books again, this time using their hearts.

Back to what this post is all about, can a minority be elected?

I must admit I haven't followed BHO that much...just change for change sake... boring.
ANYBODY can run on that platform. I could change things, care to vote for me?

The main thing that I hear is that he WILL raise taxes to help the undertrodden.
Whatever happened to self reliance?
Where is his substance? Maybe you can fill me in. Do we have enough space here?
...

A discussion of his platform may or may not be pertinent regarding whether a MINORITY can get elected... More likely a combination of the person him/herself AND what they bring to the table...

Anyway, he damn well better raise taxes. There are way too many wealthy CONSERVATIVE, REPUBLICAN (and DEMOCRAT) supporters who pay way too little of their income to support government, while middle/lower class folks making passable wages pay all too much. The AMT is a perfect example. Also, go look at the Hedge fund managers, BILLIONAIRES, and they pay NOTHING for the privilege, due to REPUBLICAN rules. So of course, to right the wrong, you gotta RAISE TAXES, but noone hears the details of the plan, they just get their balls in a vice the minute they hear those two buzz words. How disingenuous.
So go vote republican. Make Cheryl happy. Watch OUR country go to hell in a handbasket. How bad do things have to get before you realize we have to keep BOTH parties on their toes, and not let either one get too strong a foothold in the process.
feh.

flashbacks to the late 50's... my infancy years, of course... when the question was can a Catholic get elected??.... and it was no small question, then...
and the answer was... yup...

One of Obama's best qualities is his enduring confidence... not a desperate kind of confidence, but the kind that never even needs to rebound....

he understands some of the most basic issues of our cultural personality and
the ways to bring attitude change... and that is powerful and seldom seen in our candidates...

you can argue whether a black man can be elected, whether a woman can be elected... but if you choose to believe on that level... you get stuck in the same rut that has turned us into the failing democracy we are today...

the only way to raise it up is to believe that what we are told by the power machine will not work is pure crap and only meant to keep us under their thumb...

choose the level of evolution you want to believe in and stand strong and confident there... and then you will find out.. that we can.. we can... we can...

BELIEVE in those ruby slippers, put them on, and start tappin your feet...
we way outnumber 'em...
WE ARE the deciders...

Don't get me wrong. I'm voting for Obama. I've just come to the point where I sense that Mc Same will be elected by those folks that Obama refered to as bitter blue collar workers who cling to guns and religion.

I sense that people who came of age before the mottos of, "Don't trust anyone over thirty," and, "Question Authority" became accepted principles, believe what they hear instead of thinking things through. Combine that with a basic rascist upbringing and you get what we got here today.

Sorry, got to run, more to follow.

Did anybody see Rev Wright on Bill Moyers? He will not go down very well with the "real" Christians. soundbytes and context be damned, if they hear what he is really saying they will reject him as an anti christian_anti American theology (I don't care how interested Bill was because as we already know he has been duped by the devil).

Did not see it.

I did have an interesting conversation over breakfast at work on friday. One of my elderly co-workers whom I love dearly, let me know where he stands. I have never tried to hide my political views at work.

I shared my feelings that we need to break out of the mold of old white rich men running our country and that I wish Obama could win. But that I felt that this election season has exposed how our country has not gained much understanding since freeing our slaves or in our treatment of women since their emancipation as well.

I explained that I have come to believe that mc same will be our next president due to the fact that too many people are, still racist to a varying degree and, still feel women are genetically inferior to men.

My Kansas farm raised, NRA member, 64 year old co-worker became angry, stood up and shouted, "Do you know what he (Obama) believes?" I said I believe many of the same things. He shouted, "If you don't like it here, you can just leave." I said I like the idea of changing our country for the better.

Kind of reminds me of many years ago when readers digest put window stickers with the phrase, "America Love it or leave it" in their monthly mag. I saw them on cars everywhere.

Nice credo. Love the fact that we are going to kill innocent people, or do what ever we want, or leave.

Well, my co-worker calmed down on the walk back to our office. He talked about his feelings that entitlement breeds people who abuse the system and don't deserve our help.

He talked about how much money is wasted on social programs. I countered with how we waste so much more on coporate welfare and how even that money dwarfs what we have wasted and still continue to waste in Iraq.

I also stated that the more money we spend to educate poor people the less money we will spend on prisons and the more tax money we will receive as they contribute.

I don't know if I should talk about politics with him any more. I want to understand how he feels and what he knows, but I don't want to make him feel bad.

kj, well said and right on...

If we cannot recognize as equals those who are different, then we lose the right to be treated as equals. When we lose the right to be different, we lose the right to be free. .

I just wish 'white america' with their centuries old inbred practices of their chosen religious sects could, with an open mind, see how others worship what looks to me to be the same god. Yes, there are differences, yes, the people are expressive in response and music but, if you look at the underlying message, all are the same. On a personal level, I love hearing what Rev. Wright has to say. He appeals to my open mind.

Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now.
