Hmmm...just reacting to some of the things said on this post as of late (since i've been gone wayyy too long to read ALL the posts!)

I absolutely LOVE Jon Stewart's 'The Daily Show'. Stewart is a riot and yet still comes off as being a somewhat legitimate newsanchor supplying the world with not only great information and worthy news, but shamelessly mocking the stuff he reports on to the delight of viewers. The ads for the show are equally funny. Just recently there was a spin-off of the CNN's Paula Zahn thing (zipper sound and all) for 'The Daily Show'. I doubt they'd ever have to work at being Bluderites <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/tongue.gif" width=15 height=15>
I know SNL sucks compared to the classic shows, but the Weekend Update with Jimmy Fallon and Tina Faye has been delicious the past 2 years! Tina Faye has really livened up the whole thing and put in very sharp writing!
As for other nightly anchors; I actually prefer Tom Brokaw. (speaking of SNL, can anyone else listen to Tom Brokaw without cracking up thinking of that Dana Carvey SNL skit spoofing him? I sure can't!) He's sturdy, serious, but lets his emotions run when things are tough, and without using hokey down-home sayings & acting like a nutcase like Dan Rather. I find Brokaw kind of comforting.

How is Peter Jennings a Blunderite? I know I should know this, but alas, forgive me, I do not =(

One thing I heard, I think it was on either SNL or TDS, was a comment concerning Geraldo. They said the only good thing about having troops & reporters over there is that now we finally found someplace to send Geraldo, and hopefully keep him there! <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/idea.gif" width=15 height=32>

---oh yeah, 2 more things: Ashcroft and Pretzel Prez W. are really going out of their way to get us all nuked. "Axis of Evil"--what the F___ is up with THAT??!! Man it's almost like he's giving Omar & bin Ladin the finger and saying 'hit me with your best shot!' I'm sorry but personally, not an attitude I really want our country to have when it has enough of that kind of attitude already! No wonder people are trying to bomb us...

If I hear 'God Bless America' once more I will probably get violent with Celine Dion...

For the ever-present arguement of whether history repeats itself, 2 of the lines from the wonderous Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" are "Terror on the Airline" and "Russians in Afghanistan"...weird shit...

Didn't he come back? Can we send him back again if he did? Can we trade him for someone or something or anything..?

I thought Geraldo was now in Africa somewhere, covering Somalia or something along those lines. Did he come back? What happened? Did they kick him out of Afghanistan? And here I thought he'd finally found his niche in life ...

I think you're right. I did hear something about his heading to Somalia. Yeah..Afghanistan had probably had enough. I mean..they have a lot to deal with there. Somalia, too, of course, but they have no government at all now, as I understand it, so I guess they can't keep him out.

It staggers the imagination ...

I don't necessarily believe in everything the leaders of our country are doing (the information they are actually allowing us to know), but I found this comment to be out of line.

Let me first state that, yes, ShannonO, I respect your opinion...as well as your first amendment rights. I just happen to have a conflicting opinion.
The government has always been secretive (for lack of a better term). I vote, and I can only hope that the leaders succeed in their positions. I cannot say that I agree with everything they do, for then I would be truly ignorant. I also must trust that they have the best intentions in mind.
As far as modern sociology is concerned, nothing of this calibur has happened on our own cherished soil. This cannot be an easy task to control, and I can't fathom the pressure of victory.
Before anyone fights me on this point, I do realize that our President, VP, etc., are all voted into position in hopes that they can handle every situation, and lead us correctly.
But no one can be ready for this....

Personally, I've always generally gone along with the concept that turnabout is fair play. Hey: we've been "The Empire of Satan" for ages. Why can't they be an Axis of Evil for a while, and see how much they like it? No, we're not perfect. Neither are they. Why on earth would we be expected to be, though?

And in a situation like we're in, you do have to trust in the leaders you've got because, for one thing, they know a whole hell of a lot more than we do about the situation as a whole. For another -- and whether we like it or not -- they're the only ones who can really do anything, since they have the power. (We gave it to them or they took it or whatever, but we are here now, and that's how it is. )

What I am encouraged by is seeing Arlo (and people like him, albeit what few there may be) coming to terms with his identity as a spiritual leader. That's another of those things that, like it or not, are simply what is. These are times, to paraphrase one writer, to try men's souls. People like Arlo are looked to for guidance, and are often emulated. And this hasn't suddenly stopped being a "me too" society, either. A lot of folk out there are strongly attached to having a fixed status quo, and need to be informed of what that is going to be now. What Arlo says and does matters. It influences people. I'd as soon have him fully aware of just how much.

Meanwhile, certain Muslims feel very strongly that the world should be entirely Moslem, and that all the Infidel must die by virtue of being Infidel. They also firmly believe that we are doing the same thing they are, apparently because they can't imagine anything having changed politically or philosophically from whatever was happening during the Middle Ages. (It hasn't changed in their world, ergo, it hasn't changed anywhere.) The rest of the world is being hoodwinked into believing that we're out to conquer the world, and that the U.S. will become what England was last century, only more so. It becomes a choice of converting to "peaceful Islam" or accepting "godless and decadent, warlike and rapacious" U. S. rule. (Talk about your lack of choice ...) Whether we understand it or not, or whether we even know about it, that's something else we'll have to deal with, because it's such a real and imminent threat in the minds of so many people around the world.

After the Olympics opening ceremony one of the sodiers spoke of how the ritual and drumming of the Native Americans had a deep and transformational effect on the troops. All of a sudden, apparently, they knew who they were and why they were there. They were galvnized into a cohesive whole. Something happened that made a real difference to and in them. And again, I'm really glad that Arlo has woken a bit more fully to his place in the world, and to the responsibility he has because of it. It's good to have someone intelligent and compassionate around in times like these ...
