Stephen Colbert always says that bears are the most dangerous, but generally they'll usually do their best to avoid you. Same with sharks. Around these parts we've got lots of rattlesnakes but they don't come lookin' for you, and generally rattle a warning if you're gettin' too close. In my exerience as I've journeyed through life, I've found that the most dangerous animal I encounter again and again is myself.

For most of your questions, the answer is "it depends," though not for the last one, but that goes beyond religion, and the problem with Phelps is that (aside from the fact that he's just nuts) his right to speak is in conflict with the rights of others. I don't have any answers to how to resolve those kinds of conflicts -- part of me hopes he loses the lawsuit, part of me wonders, if he does, what the unintended consequences are going to be. Silent moment of prayer by one child on their own in a public or private school? Not really a problem for me. Led by the principal in a public school? Harder call -- I'm suspicious because of the potential for abuse. Led by the principal of a private religious school at the school? I don't go in the doghouse... But what about works of art that depicts a religious figure? Do we ban it from publicly-funded museums? Whaddaya think?

Religious symbols on public property? Well...what's it to me if a person walks down a public street with a religious symbol around their neck? Or perhaps you had in mind the erection of a cross on the White House lawn on its own, unaccompanied by other religious and non-religious symbols) -- that's a problem.

School books designed to allow god to exist? Assuming we're talking public schools here, and supposedly non-fiction textbooks rather than novels, nope I don't think public funds should be used to support the existence of god, particularly not one version of god -- after all, there are people who both love dogs and realize that they start out as puppies.
