I mean Bush and his ilk were so highly thought of, that last November, in a country that stills harbors degrees of prejudice, fear and ingnorance, we elected a black guy with a muslim name as president. I'd call that a revolution. Now, we need to make it work.

I'm still writing letters, signing petitions, going to meetings (locally, to try to influence my representatives and senators).

Any thoughts on what else I can do to try to make it work?

It will take more than one person, but yes. A major obstacle to dethroning the lobbyist holds is to undo the gerrymandering done for the last twenty years. Some of the districts are now insanely drawn to ensure incumbents get reelected. It is worse on the right because of Tom DeLay but not good wherever it was done because it means they have no fear of the voters.

This one is hard because Congress doesn't want to give back the power.

I'm sure others are in the same position we're in--there's not much of anything we can do to affect or change our own so-called 'representatives.' You still gotta do the calling and writing and talking and whatever can be done, all the while knowing that we're just giving them something to wipe their asses with. The numbers are just too against us here, at least for 2010. (I mean, I mean ... GWB lives eight miles away. And they love him.)

But there are races in other parts of the country that might have a chance but are underfunded. I can't give much to anyone, sans a job (no, Larry, that is NOT Sansabelt(R)), but what I can give, I'll try to give wisely, where it will do the most good.

Awareness itself is a help. I wasn't aware of the extent of the gerrymandering until a colleague of mine who is a Democratic operative pointed it out to me. Sometimes just using the social networks you do have (this is one) is a way to point out the problems. Post it enough in enough places and the starved 24X7X365 news organizations pick it up (particularly if you post into the comments sections of places like abc.news, cnn.com, etc. Forget Fox. They've quit being a news organization.

Over a long time of being a web provacateur, one learns the power of simply putting the right information in the right place at the right time, then letting the amplifier that is the web do its voodoo. It's just like folk singing without the guitar. Low, slow and under the radar.

For example, say you want to talk about jobs. Loss of jobs shows up in housing. Housing shows up in the HUD maps. HUD operates a public locator system for organizations that sell HUD homes. It's a public site. You can look at it and instantly see what is happening in say Chicago, Detroit and Atlanta. It's shocking.

Also, remember the web is an Information Hoover. Whole web sites get automatically constructed by bots that scour the keywords you put on files. For example, say you are in the business of auto-constructing tourist pages about towns, you can pay people to write articles or you can vacuum the forests and make new trees. If you put your own message inside the big containers, it gets swept up and put where you'd never think to find it but others will sort of like Dorothy. Watch out for falling farm houses or old churches. You never know where they will land with a little girl and a dog. Who needs ruby red slippers?
