Welcome to the jungle, we got fun and games
We got everything you want, and we know their names
We are the people that you'll find, whoever you may need

I'm sure if that song were to be written now, Axl Rose would have dedicated it to all you silly blunderers Image

Patriot's Dream
words and music by Arlo Guthrie

Living now here but for fortune
Placed by fate's mysterious schemes
Who'd believe that we're the ones asked
To try to rekindle the patriot's dreams

Arise sweet destiny, time runs short
All of your patience has heard their retort
Hear us now for alone we can't seem
To try to rekindle the patriot's dreams

Can you hear the words being whispered
All along the American stream
Tyrants freed the just are imprisoned
Try to rekindle the patriot's dreams

Ah but perhaps too much is being asked of too few
You and your children with nothing to do
Hear us now for alone we can't seem
To try to rekindle the patriot's dreams

On the autoharp e-mail list someone posted the words to a Canadian version of THIS LAND:

Subject: this land is your land-cdn version

and of course the chorus for Canadians goes

This land is your land, this land is my land
from Bonavista to Vancouver Island
from the Great lake waters to the Arctic Circle
this land was made for you and me.

(Bonavista is in Newfoundland, where John Cabot reputedly first landed,
not all that far from the very most eastern point of North America and
Canada.)

Mamma, Mamma, Please Wake up!

Momma said it's raining and I can't go outside
I want to go to the park where my brother and uncle died
there's a whinning sound in the air and big booms all around
I think it must be more than rain
I see smoking holes in the ground

something just slammed into our house
and made a big loud roar
our picture of Mohammed fell hard
and broke on the floor

Momma Momma , please wake up,
Momma I'm afraid
I just heard a neighbor yell
"Get out , it's a missle raid"

There's a General, on CNN
standing at the battle board
he's pointing out the latest strikes
to cut the "Taliban cord"

"There may be collateral damage" he said,
"in isolated towns"
but, he doesnt show the growing red stain
on that small boy's mother's gown

The war on terror has just begun,
but, as yet, we don't know
the terror in that young boy's eyes
and, the kind of seeds, we sow

Bumper...sadly....

THE PACIFICA BLUES
By Roger Manning

If doing something a thousand times
Would guarantee that it'd be done right
Oh, wouldn't everything be so much easier?

Greed written all over his face
Strife all over the place
Well they keep acting on their fear
It ain't the end of the world
But you can see it from here

Networks net a massive catch of brainwashed
Who might act different if they knew

But then a good song
Comes on the Pacifica radio
And longing for something to believe in
People take to the street singing
"No justice, no peace"

(Did you hear what the cop said?
They had a sign that said, "No Justice, No Police."
And then they stormed the Brooklyn Bridge,
and everything else...
They did everything we do!
But none of 'em got arrested!)

I ain't from the peace movement
I'm from the anti-bullshit movement
Yeah, well, history has taught me
Not that I was willing to listen
I just couldn't help it

It was a good song
It was the truth only louder
It gave me something to believe in
So I took to the street to speak with my feet

And people noticed
And were astonished
No one had told them of any opposition
To what they'd been led to believe in.
Yeah now most of them didn't really want to know
But a few joined in because they couldn't
Stand the lies any more.

It was a good song
It was the truth only louder
It gave us something to believe in
People took the streets
Trying to make the truth even louder

It was a good song!

Bruce Berry was a working man
He used to load that econoline van

And in the night when the people
were gone he used to pick up my guitar.
And sing a song in a shaky, shaky, voice
That was real as the day is long.

tonight's the night/NEIL Y.

"Beautiful People
You live in the same world as I do
But somehow I never noticed
You before today
I'm ashamed to say

Beautiful People
We share the same back door
And it isn't right
We never met before
But then
We may never meet again
If I weren't afraid you'd laugh at me
I would run and take all your hands
And I'd gather everyone together for a day
And when we're gathered
I'll pass buttons out that say
Beautiful People
Then you'll never be alone
'Cause there'll always be someone
With the same button on as you
Include him in everything you do.

Beautiful People
You ride the same subway
As I do every morning
That's got to tell you something
We got so much in common
I go the same direction that you do
So if you take care of me
Maybe I'll take care of you

Beautiful People
You look like friends of mine
And it's about time
That someone said it here and now
I make a vow that sometime, somehow
I'll have a meeting
Invite everyone you know
I'll pass out buttons
For the ones come to show
Beautiful People
Never have to be alone
'Cause there'll always be someone
With the same button on as you
Include him in everything you do
He may be sitting right next to you
He may be a beautiful people too
And if you take care of him
Maybe he'll take care of you
'Cause all of the beautiful people do
And I'm a beautiful people too."

********RHYMES and REASONS*************

So you speak to me of sadness & the coming of the winter
Fear that is within you now that seems to never end
And the dreams that have escaped you & a hope that you've forgotten
And you tell me that you need me now & you want to be my friend
And you wonder where we're going where's the
rhyme $ where's the reason
And it's you cannot accept it is here we must begin
To seek the wisdon of the clildren
And the graceful way of flowers in the wind

For the children & the flowers are my sisters & my brothers
Thier laughter & thier loveliness would clear a cloudy day
Like the music of the mnts. & the colors of the rainbow
They're a promise of the future & a blessing for today

Tho' the cities start to crumble & the towers fall around us
The sun is slowly fading & it's colder than the sea
It is written from the desert to the mountains they shall lead us
By the hand & by the heart & they will comfort you & me
In their innocence & trusting they will teach us to be free

And one for my favorite people, the Medea:

DISINFORMATION
w/m Buffy Sainte-Marie
(c) Gypsy Boy Music

Coincidence and likely stories
they dog your trail like a pack of lies
They whine at night when the lights are out
You toss and turn
You pitch and roll
Disinformation, you spin it like a silkworm

Just when I need another point of view
here you come from nowhere
from over the waves
I stand amazed
I see your greatest hits
they blow back down the chimney into everyone’s eyes

Creative thinking in the first degree
You’re a three-way mirror of a one-way world
It’s a perverse company you work for
They build the past
It just can’t last
It’s obsolete by design

They send you out rerouting history
to make the same old mistakes in a brand new way
Come out from under cover
Ollie Ollie in free
Come out come out wherever you are

And virgin places don't mean a thing
to people who never bring their hearts along
and fools like them never fall at all
They’re tough as sin, let nobody in
They turn and spin your wheels and nobody wins

(repeat verse 1)

-Z

Spin
© 2000 Lower Dryad Music

Written shortly after the Russian submarine Kursk went down.

Six o'clock dinner, the family falls silent
Move over a little I can't see the screen
The man in the box speaks in high definition
Turn it up loud so I won't hear the screams
More about bad things the bad guys are doing
More about how I need what they sell
And right down the road they are building a prison
On the whole the economy's doing quite well

Give me the update, tell me again
Show me the difference between us and them
Give it a number between one and ten
Give me the headline
Give me the spin

A picture is fading inside of a wallet
Inside of a pocket in the pants of a man
Soggy with saltwater there in the dark
In a dead submarine from a faraway land
Saltwater runs down the face of a woman
As she thinks how he can't be all he could be
Need I point out the pointless pointing of fingers
And the point of a missile that's pointed at me?

Our side appears to be up for the moment
They taste the bitter defeat they deserve
We shoot the horizon and catch our own bullets
And find it is only the hatred we serve

Give me the update, tell me again
Show me the difference between us and them
Give it a number between one and ten
Give me the headline
Give me the spin

We Are The Gentle, Angry People
(Music and lyrics: H. Near)

We are the gentle, angry people
And we're singing, singing for our lives;
We are the gentle, angry people
And we're singing, singing for our lives.

We are the dreamers of the future
And we're dreaming, dreaming for our lives;
We are the dreamers of the future
And we're dreaming, dreaming for our lives.

We are the weavers of new patterns
And we're weaving, weaving for our lives;
We are the weavers of new patterns
And we're weaving, weaving for our lives.

We are creators of new visions
And we're creating, creating for our lives;
We are creators of new visions
And we're creating, creating for our lives.

We are the gentle, angry people
And we're singing, singing for our lives;
We are the gentle, angry people
And we're singing, singing for our lives.

We are the gentle, angry people
And we're singing, singing for our lives;
We are the gentle, angry people
And we're singing, singing for our lives.

This was real popular, apparently, around the time of the American Revolution. Just goes to show how some things never seem to change too much. (There are 7 verses, but this pretty much gives the drift of the song. What gets me is the chorus, anyway ... Image)

The Liberty Song

Words by John Dickenson,
Music by William Boyce

1.
Come join hand in hand brave Americans all, And rouse your bold hearts at fair Liberty's call;
No tyrannous acts shall suppress your just claim,
Or stain with dishonor America's name.

Chrous

In Freedom we're born and in Freedom we'll live, Our purses are ready.
Steady, friends, steady, Not as slaves but as Freemen our money we'll give.

2.
Our worthy forefathers - Let's give them a cheer-
To climates unknown did courageously steer;
Thro' oceans, to deserts, for freedom and fame. Chorus

5.
Then join hand in hand brave Americans all,
By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall;
In so righteous a cause let us hope to succeed,
For heaven approves of each generous deed. Chrous

6.
All ages shall speak with amaze and applause,
Of the courage we'll show in support of our laws;
To die we can bear - but to serve we disdain,
For shame is to Freedom more dreadful than pain. Chorus
