you're welcome, nathen. of course, there are other signs that they're connected (the exact wording of at least two of the letters, obviously is one), so it does seem to be a coordinated "attack". now who coordinated it is the question...from across the seas or a homegrown variety terrorist that saw a good time to act.

These attacks have gone international with two companies hit in Pakistan, seems to have been mailed from New York City.

Around our neck of the woods rb, the back page is SPORTS... which seems to be the primary concern of many on the train i notice...
only in the local paper, tucked within, is the police blotter... which i take pleasure in reading, and not seeing my name nor my house mentioned...
then I turn to the obits....

Wow Arnie I just realized what a small town Ogdensburg is. In the local paper, the police blotter is on the back page, WITH the obits. Sheltered is an understatement at best! Yes. To be quite honest, first I read my horoscope. Then the TV section. Then the blotter (or any other small articles of someones bad fortune) then come the obits. Besides the big city life, we think alike. (sometimes. no type-casting here).

Not the least bit stupid.

While I haven't been getting the NY papers, (or any papers, for that matter), I understand there are sections being devoted to the victims, in which little biographical snippets are written up about each one. Each day covers X number -- the reporters are going to family, friends, etc., in an attempt to glean details that will give us an idea of the people they were, albeit in very few words.

At least, that's what I've heard. Maybe someone can corroborate that? Or correct me if I'm wrong?

I'll corroborate - I read an article the other day that said that's exactly what the NYT is doing.

Pretty nice if you ask me. Each and every one of them deserve to be remembered - and to me, it really shows the impact of what happened better than just a list of names would do - or even putting out a single edition the size of a phone book to put the full obits in.

Then again, maybe the phone book idea isn't so bad - maybe the NYT will do that eventually, after they've gotten through them all.

That's what Newsday, the Long Island paper is doing every day, too. The regular obits are up to families, or maybe associates to list like always, and they were certainly a lot more them for a while there, but the mini articles about each individual victims continue.

yes... mini articles about the people lost are in NYT and NEWSDAY... no actual swarm of obits however, since a large majority of the missing people are still not officially declared dead! Only 480+ bodies have been actually recovered, and not all even identified yet... and the latest news indicates that there might be a discrepancy between total count of missing, to the tune of about 1800 (LESS!)... People were being given expedited death certificates for still missing people, if desired, but I don't think they publicized how many had taken that opportunity, so the unofficial memorials continue, but the official count of dead remains low...

i'm really glad to hear that NYT and newsday are doing that. as kim said, each of them deserve to be remembered in more than an obituary. not that everyone in the world doesn't "deserve" to be remembered, but with such an event...and the people that have lost someone not even knowing if they'll ever have the body to bury, it's something for them to "hold".

Sort of an obituary, but a tribute as well. I have made myself believe these people didn't die in vain. The reasoning will be slow in coming, and understanding. None the less, these folks will be etched in my mind, forever.... My heart goes out to the familys, whose lives have been forever changed!

Did anyone else read that the total number dead had dropped down to about 3000?
