A California teen, needing a liver transplant, has died during the wait for her insurer's approval. CIGNA approved the transplant, then withdrew approval when the girl contracted an infection after a bone marrow transplant. CIGNA re-approved it after the family and about 150 people protested outside one of their offices. The girl died shortly thereafter. The family plans to bring CIGNA to court as being responsible for the girl's death.

My better half works in a doctor's office. She has related time and time again how doctors' hands are tied as to many medical procedures. Many times they are at the mercy of white collar bean counters who make the decisions as to whether or not a patient's treatment is approved. Shouldn't that be left up to the doctors? Our insurers are more likely concerned with their financial income than their clients' medical outcome.

So sad that this happened to this girl. She shouldn't have had to die...
