Nominate Pete Seeger for a Nobel Prize

The Nation Thu Mar 22, 1:40 PM ET

The Nation -- Isn't it about time that Pete Seeger was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize?

As one person points out in the nominating petition below--this is a no brainer! In his decades-long quest for peace and justice, Seeger --now 87 --has never put down his guitar, never let his spirits dim and always kept ours aloft.

Whether it's about ending wars or banning nuclear weapons or supporting economic justice or fighting for environmental sanity--Seeger's music has been essential to all those working for dignity and true compassion. Sign the petition below!

Pete Seeger Nomination for Nobel Peace Prize

As you know, Pete Seeger has been a crusader for peace and social justice over the course of his 87-year lifetime. As a prominent musician his songs, messages and performance style have worked to engage other people, particularly the youth, in causes to end the Vietnam war, ban nuclear weapons, work for international solidarity, and ecological responsibility. It is time that a cultural worker receives the recognition that this work has great influence and global reach, that it is not only a medium of entertainment but of education, compassion and fraternity.

I posted a petition on a site named petitionthem.com. The aim is to persuade the American Friends Service Committee to nominate Pete Seeger for the Nobel Peace Prize. I thought many people in the veterans of the civil right movement would be interested in adding their support. I'm asking everyone to circulate the petition information to at least 5 other people asking them to notify 5-10 other people. Perhaps you would be kind enough to send this announcement around.

Please read about and sign the petition.

There is also a forum where you can talk about this petition and add comments about your own influences directly or indirectly from Pete, the music, or the political consciousness he promoted.

Cheryl, I wanted to keep the Kucinich thread closer on topic, and also thought this deserved it's own thread anyway...

No prob. I wasn't sure whether to put this in a separate topic or not. This should give it some more notice. He certainly deserves the award...
