I am writing to you all because I know that you are sensitive caring people, and that you are great fans of a man that has dedicated his life to making the world a better place.

I have just discovered something purely by accident. Bimini, an island of the Bahamas, 50 miles off the coast of Florida, is being destroyed by Hilton to make a super exclusive resort, casino, golf course, and spa for the affluent members of our society. Surely they will also exploit the locals, which have previously supported themselves with fishing and other means. They soon will be servers and attendants for the vacationers.

I was watching a program on the Discovery channel about the breeding habits of sharks and other things. The lemonshark spawns in the mangrove nursery of Bimini. The babies live in this nursery for up to 4 years after birth. It is their protective fortress until they are strong enough to venture out into the open ocean.

This once clear, shallow, beautiful lagoon is now a golf course. The lagoon has been filled with earth, (to make enough space for the course) because the islands of Bimini are each only about 10 sqare miles. (Longer than they are wide). They have dynamited the coral to make it safe for yachts and boats in the new state of the art marina.

It is so tragic. I haven't found any info on what has become of the lemon shark, or the other 1000's of marine life that once thrived in the well balanced eco-system.

There is still action in the works. It's too late for the murdered coral reefs, but they believe, with enough support, the mangrove nursery can eventually be restored.

If this doesn't anger you enough, the nursery is the wetland that protects the island from flooding in the time of hurricanes. (I personally hope a hurricane comes and destroys the project).
