Oh and since it takes 10-20 years to show up, it won't affect George so must be unimportant.

"The Agriculture Department said yesterday that it would scale back testing for mad cow disease by about 90 percent, saying the number of infected animals was far too low to justify the current level of surveillance."

NY Times

I dunno: Give me a 3 inch fili and if it doesn't say moo, it's over cooked.

Life is too short to worry about, what one cannot control anyhow....

It's been a bum rap for Canadian farmers, as ONE case of mad cow disease, and they had a one yr boycott of Canadian beef....

They should not sell downer cows....

vCJD like Aids isn't something to be taken lightly, but I find it interesting that you have posted this because I have just finished reading Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation, yes it is a few years old now but I've only just got hold of it and found the time to read it. I honestly thought that it was a very informative objectional book; not just a mone against Mc D's.

Now I have the seconed ed printed with an after word in 2002. In the added chapter The Meaning Of Mad Cow there is a bit witch reads:-

The claim that mad cow disease had never been detected in the United States is accurate, as of this writhing. {2002} The USDA, {US Department of Agriculture} however, has not tried very hard to find it. "If you don't look, you won't find," says Dr Perluigi Gambetti, a BSE expert who heads the National Prion Disease Surveillance Center at Case Western Reserve University. " Unless we test more, we will never know if we have it here." Since 1990 {-2002} approximately 375 million cattle have been slaughtered in the United States, and about 15,000 of them were tested for mad cow. Belgium, with a cattle herd roughly one-thirtienth the size of ours, plans to test 400,000 for mad cow disease every year.

I'd recomend reading this book, if it dosn't trun you veggie then it will deffinatly make you think twice about where you buy your meat.

The problem exsist, where ( at least from everyting I've read ) that mad cow disease, is a twist of fate. As farmers are quick to sell 'Downer Cows'

Any amimal that can't get up, and walk on it's own is not healthy.... but the beat goes on, and farmers are quick to sell downer cows......

I love the restaraunt, where you go in, and pick out your steak, BEFORE they cook it..... If you don't mind walking on peanut shells...

Vegitarian...... There's only so much you can do with soybeans???? I limit eating red meat, because of my high cholestoral, but I love a good Beef Steak.... I love Moose meat too.... That is to die for...... Can't stand venison, or Elk, and I detest bear meat.... I tried it once and spit it out.... Actually I like Rabbit, but that's one of those meats that taste like Chicken... Like Frog legs... Love Frog legs.... But I wouldn't go as far as to kill a lil bunny rabbit, or kill a frog....... I just know from memory I do like the meat......

I just can't get enough....

I should become a vegitarian, as I'm sure my health would improve.... One thing at a time I suppose...

Altho I did quit eating pork...... I got sick, and blamed it on the chops. and I won't be eating pig, for a very long time, if ever again..... My favorite is fish, but your not supposed to eat that anymore.... One can't win for losing, in the this will give you cancer epidemic.......

Your 100% right tho...... More research and testing should be done....... I surely wouldn't want to succomb to MCD...... Holes in the brain.....not pretty...... :?

I wasn't saying that everyone should become a vegie, and as for the soy bean thing, there is more protean in every day veg, nuts and even more in the mushrooms they make Quorn from then you can get in meat and that protean your boady can more easily digest and make better use of.

But like I just said I'm not saying that everyone become veggie, I think that everyone should have the right to know in just what kind of condition their meat is being raised, the natural way I will venchure to saymost poeple will agree is best. I know that it isn't easy, in fact the big companys go out of their way and lie and try to convince you blue is black to hide how the meat is raised; but if you choose to eat something for what ever reason you should be able to know everything about it in order to make a fully conscious decition about it. It is your own boady after all and you've got to live in it.

I am not a veggie as such I do eat meat but not much. I don't really like much of it. I very rarely buy it because it it very hard to find meat that has been raise wholy organicly. I eat chickin very realy becuase true organic chikin is so expenisive, and when we go down to Alan's Mum she always has a Lamb dinner waiting. The butchur where she buys it is one of the every few left that buys its meat live from the farmer ( in this case the farm right across the countary road, and yes I do get a prang of guilt when i see them playing in the field) and then slaughters them in his own slughter house round the back of the shop. I feel comfortable eating that Lamb because I can see for my self that it has led a short but very healthy life. and I know the buchure is of like mind, I was chatting with him once and he told me that he stopped selling eggs from a long term friend when they admitted giving the chickins something to make the yolk bright yellow.

Yes I very very very realy eat meat becuse I can not stand the factory Farming methods used to day, but I do agree that red meat is a good ( though I not too sure it's the best) sourse of proteain-Iron-and seelium.
Alan however is a strict veggie and has been of nearly 30 years and it hasn't done him any harm he is very strong and a hard working builder. I just urge people to try their best to get hold of as much info as they can before buying meat so they can make well informed decitions, not just for the enviroment or the well being of the animals but for their own health.

Nutrition can be a subtle thing. I always found the arguements that mad cow disease actually results from a chronic divalent cation imbalance or deficiency brought on by natural or xenotic levels of cations in certain regions and the long term use of agrochemicals (many change the natural balance of cations in the soil by addition of excess or chelation). The disease itself is the result of a divalent cation induced protein folding. The problem appears when the wrong metals are abundent in the environment and it is a cascade effect (one protein improperly folded induce others to do the same).

You are what you eat!
