Dixie Chicks Remark Irks Country Fans
(Yahoo News Briefs)

NASHVILLE, Tennessee - The Dixie Chicks are drawing harsh words from country music fans for remarks singer Natalie Maines made about President George W. Bush during a recent performance in London.

Maines told the audience earlier this week, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

Angry phone calls flooded Nashville radio station WKDF-FM on Thursday, some calling for a boycott of the Texas trio's music.

The group released a statement Thursday saying they have been overseas for several weeks and "the anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."

In a separate statement Thursday, Maines said, "I feel the president is ignoring the opinion of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

Way to go, Natalie!! I'm going out and buying their latest CD!! (Of course, I wanted it anyway, but this seems like a good time to get it).

Since I already have all the Dixie Chicks CD's there's not much I can do except say "Thank you Natalie". I guess the Dixie Chicks are going to be the "Johnny Cash" of the new millenium.

Sounds like Martie and Emily might be rubbing off on Natalie. It can only do good.

They're getting creamed on the C&W stations. I hope they know their original fans agree and love them.

2 minutes later--Never mind--Natalite already apologized to Bush. Guess $$ speak louder.

I can understand where she is coming from, like her, I have a great deal of respect for the President, at least the office of the President, but like her, I am unhappy with what George Bush is doing with the office.

I would never want to see George Bush harmed in any way, I would not want to see gross disrespect shown towards him, but yes, I will question his actions over and over again, and I will make commends regarding him that are rude, so what I am saying is this, If I had a public eye watching me, I think I would have responded in like manner.

Way to go, Natalie. I love the DC and was listening to their song, Travelling Soldier, several times just today in the car. I had no idea she'd made such a candid comment and I can only commend her for her strength and committment.

I'm stunned that the CW fans would call stations and be upset. They should be supportive of her comments.

And, anyway, who cares WHERE a president was born? Does it matter whether he's a Texan or a Pennsylvanian? He's an American, period. Like him, love him, hate him, respect or not... doesn't matter to me where his mother happened to be at the time of his birth.
