I was at a Teach-In last night, and heard from a guy who just spent two weeks in Iraq. His talk, about the needs of children there, was very moving. The Sanctions against Iraq have prevented the Iraqi people from rebuilding the infrastructure (electric, water, sewage, etc) that was destroyed in the Gulf War, and he said that because of the problems with infrastructure, maybe a million and a half people have died (sanitation, medical facilities, etc.). Most of those were children.

Sigh... it makes me cry... but it also makes me want to do something to change this. So even though I can start moving into my apartment on the 15th, I'm heading south. If any of you are going to the rally at the UN building, I hope the area is so crowded that we need a miracle to find one another!

(A permit has been granted for a stationary rally, but no march.)

We did actually do something in Portland today. No permits, no real plan, but we did stop traffic. We actually walked up and down the light rail tracks too! A couple of cops said weird things to me (I didn't see any pickles). It was like they were trying to find someone whose buttons they could push...no arrests that I saw.

Got back from NYC about an hour ago... gonna look at the news websites in a little bit...

This morning around 11:30 I got to the City (Yankee Stadium area) with four busloads of people from Albany. We split into small groups and made our way to Midtown, arriving in the area about 12:30... I say "in the area" because we could not get to the rally location. We were at 53rd street, which was barricaded off at Third Ave. Headed north a bit and got to Second Ave, at around 60th... where we found more barricades keeping us from heading through to First Ave.

Now of course, you know that there was a permit for a rally, but not for a march... but that is exactly what the barricading produced. Thousands of people, carrying signs (sounds like a song) walking up second avenue, filling the street from sidewalk to sidewalk, looking for a cross-street that was not barricaded... we finally found that 69th street was not blocked off, and headed over to First, and started back south toward the rally location. It took over an hour to get back as far as 61st street... which was as far as I got. We stayed there a while, joining in chants, and trying to see the big screen that had been set up a couple of blocks further down. Unfortunately, we didn't have a radio in our group, so we couldn't listen to the speeches... I'm gonna see if they are available online at WBAI or another public service website...

Since the streets were barricaded, of course the authorities were able to control how many people actually got to the rally area... so the pictures on tv don't give a true representation of what I saw... We were shoulder to shoulder and stepping on heels out there.. on first, second and third avenues, at least up as far as 69th street... I think that we were many more than the 100,000 that I heard on tv...

Anyway, I would have stayed longer and tried to get closer to the speakers platform, but I had a bus to catch in the Bronx... we made it back just fine... and on the bus, many of us were interviewed for our local public tv/radio station, WAMC... they may do something on monday morning, and will definitely be presenting some of the interviews on "51 Percent" on Thursday nite... I'll post online info when I have it.

All in all, I'd say it was a good day... I hope that someone in Washington noticed...

A woman in Chapel Hill NC got a visit from her local police recently, seems she had sent the white house a strange package with lots of stamps and a little white powder on the outside, turns out it was RICE FOR PEACE, so I am thinking Pat Rainey done this, but who was the woman, I do know that Kitty West has a sister in Chapel Hill so let's have a confession, are there any peace loving people here?

ETSU was the site of our local peace movement, small but here in the mountains it's a good sign.
