We had a bad storm come rip-roaring through this area of No. VA yesterday afternoon. One of the huge (40-plus feet) chokecherry trees at the side of the house came down, ripped up the concrete pad our heat pump sits on, and threw the heat pump into the yard.
I've got tree people and heat pump people coming tomorrow...hopefully, we'll get air conditioning for the weekend...it's supposed to be about 95 for the next three days!

Sue, I'm so sorry about your damages and the loss of your a/c. I know first-hand how hot it can be back there! Thank goodness no one was injured. Hopefully you'll get everything back on before the mercury hits the roof.

Good grief--that was some storm! Glad you're OK, but sorry about all the damage and hassle. We had sustained winds around 38 mph all day yesterday, with gusts much higher, but we had no damage. I hope the A/C and everything else is fixed soon.

It was probably caused but all that excess hot air coming from nearby Washington D.C.

The heap pump people have been out...they refused to do anything about it until the tree and roots have been removed. The tree people are due out today... I'm hoping they can remove it today...there's no guarantee they can do the work today. Insurance will cover everything, so that part is good. In the meantime, it's supposed to be 97 on Sunday, and it's likely to be the middle of next week before everything is back to normal. Sigh!!

Oh wow, we're so sorry to hear about that. Prayers & vibes. Maybe you can run some box fans in the meantime. Hope they fix it for you soon...

Yeah, we have several box fans...in the meantime, I've been spending most afternoons at Borders, Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, the library, and we've gone to a couple movies. And I've read three novels!
This morning, while it was still cool, I cooked enough stuff to see us through the next couple days...all I have to do is nuke it in the microwave. It's too hot to cook at 6pm!
Did you know that Barnes and Noble is open until 11PM most nights?

Nah - no global warming! So what's with all the crazy weather? Wisconsin has really been hit hard with a lot of storms. I don't know what it is - but where I am in Illinois - we seem to always dodge the bullet (knock on wood). Tonight BBKing was giving a FREE concert in Grant Park in Chicago, but with all the crazy weather and predictions of what was to come - I DIDN'T hop on a train and go down to see him!!!!! Duh! Need to stick to my mantra of 'Do It ANYWAY', cuz now it's 12 Mid and the storm is just starting to hit and my little dog, Wylie is a nervous wreck!

While I've got your attention - funny story! My son is in Belize on a Mayan dig for a U of Ill summer course. Last week he wrote that he was in San Pedro and wanted to go snorkeling...but the weather was too bad. Ah-yeah, I guess! Not only was he in a 'tropical depression' at the time, but a friggin HURRICANE came into Cancun and down into Belize. I didn't hear from him for 5 +/- days. Info from the Red Cross site didn't look good! BUT, he is fine and went to see Tikal in Gualatama this weekend "...with a man with a gun so no one will mess with us..." OK then! Mom needs to breath deeply! To be young! All this after he lost his wallet and all ID (except passport) in a bar (he's 19)!!!

I keep trying to think "Your children are not your children..." but it's hard. Am I 'worried' or 'envious'? Doesn't matter...I'll sort THAT out later. I just can't wait for him to get his rear-end home in 3+ weeks, that's all.

So then...my best advice is to get a generator. I have one and it has saved a lot of groceries and flooding. I even told neighbors that they could use it if we wern't home, as long as they plugged us in first. It has saved the day many times It helps to have great neighbors to begin with, of course.

My wish is for all of you to be safe (and watch the weather channel). Some strange fronts comin' thru.

Glad Sue is doing okay. Had no idea Barnes & Nobles was open that late. I know Books-A-Million is. I've been to Cancun once in the early 80's. Glad your son is okay. Sounds like he went thru alot...

He's a 'chip off the ole block' - an adventitious spirit just like I was at his age! But, I think I was more street wise that he is. We went around about wearing a money belt. Bet he's glad he listened to mom on THAT one. Live and learn (the hard way).

Lots of people in our neighborhood have generators...not so much for lights, but to keep the sump pumps working. If their sump pumps don't have battery backup (or if the power failure is a long one) and there's days of heavy rain, basements will flood badly from the sump.
No worries here...we've got a walkout basement, no sump pump, and floor drains.

Northern NJ got whalloped with storms tonight. I just saw a NJ TRansit bus got stopped by a falling tree (bus 165 in Teaneck), but because of the awareness of the driver, who saw the tree start to go, no one was hurt. (John takes the 197 and was not involved.)

Path trains stopped running in Herald square (33rd St by the Empire State bldging ) because of a track fire. That affects about 45K riders each rush hour.

I heard that at one point 114K people in NJ had no power. I think its down to 5,000 now.

Also, just "in the news" if anyone happen to see photos of the bridge that convicted of hedge fund fraud ( Samuel Isreal) apparantly jumped or pretended to jump off of, is the Bear Mtn Bridge, which is about 20 mins from our house and the bridge that we cross every time we head up to the Guthrie Center or Beacon NY (to Pete Seeger) Its a beautiful bridge over the Hudson river and JC's trains ride along side the both banks of the river and you can see them from the bridge. This has nothing to do with the weather, but I thought it was cool.

We've got air conditioning now! First time in a week that I've slept well.

I was misinformed. Its over 114K people still without power in Jersey and 5K in NYC. My son and his GF - (I refer to Isis) - lost their power last night - their county Essex has been declared an emergency area. They packed up their cat and clothes and are staying at her folks in a neighboring town. (Dang - if I had known sooner I could have nabbed the cat for a few days!!! ) I dont know how the girl kid is, and those grandkittens, but they live in the same area. (Same county anyway).

John said last night it was 95 in West Milford, 102 in Paramus and 98 in NYC. My three most lived addresses. No excaping this one.
