For those in the DC area there is a great show at the Strathmore tonight (10/25):

This concert is a rare opportunity to hear some of the greatest musicians of American bluegrass and country. The legendary guitarist David Bromberg (deemed “electrifying” by The New York Times), boundary-busting bluegrass icon Tony Rice and singer/songwriter/yodeler/multi-instrumentalist Peter Rowan journey through American music, from early Stephen Foster to Texas swing and from Cajun fiddling to Delta blues.

This concert will have a 60-minute 1st half featuring Peter Rowan and Tony Rice, 20 minute intermission, and 75 minute 2nd half featuring David Bromberg with Angel Band.

Not to mention "bullfrog blues". Never saw Peter Rowan, but I ran sound for his brothers a few months back at our coffeehouse, they ain't bad either! Known as "The Rowan Brothers" by the way........

I've seen'm all but not together..outta be good! That Rice can pick like nothin' you ever saw and he plays Clarence White's Martin (sometimes) with the bullitt hole and all. THere is a Rowan Brothers album from 72 with Jerry Garcia on it, just awesome...just awesome...they never quite did that again...They were in the long version of the last days of the fillmore movie as well.I wish i could go to this show here,, sounds like a good one!

I made it there! Just got home around midnight. The Strathmore is a 30 minute or less subway ride from where I work in DC so I was able to get there after work with time to eat in their cafe and have a glass of champagne before the show and sit around reading the program waiting for the doors to open. Luckily I was able to get a ticket when I arrived there and had a great seat in the orchestra tier section (my favorite seating choice based on other concerts I have attended there). It looked to be pretty much a full house by the time the show got started.

It was an amazing show from start to finish. So much talent there it was somewhat overwhelming. I was familiar with all of the performers from their CD's, videos, news articles, WAMU, and Mary Cliff's show, but had never seen them on stage before. Most of the music they played was I believe from their new CDs already out or coming out at some future date. Rowan and Rice were more than spectacular and their mandolin player (got lots of applause after his solos) and bass fiddle player (he used to play with Del McCoury) were exceptional. Angel Band with Nancy Josephson (wonderful harmonies and powerful voices) was a great lead-in to David Bromberg and his band who played a lot of Deep Blues stuff taking turns on individual solos and eventually left Bromberg on stage with a single spot light shining on him giving the feeling to me of being in a Delta Juke Joint. On one song near the end he stood away from the microphone and talked and sang in a way that you felt like you were in his living room. The last song, when he came back for an encore, was a beautifully written and sensitive song about a woman growing older appearing happy but not quite hiding the sadness in the corners of her eyes.

Hopefully this show will be reviewed in the Washington Post or if someone else was there it would be nice to read a better description of the music performed than I was able to give.
