We ate a lot of rabbits when the kids were growing up; when you raise your own, you know exactly how they've been fed, what the care level was, and how clean they are in regards to antibiotics and stuff. My kids grew up more like farm kids, knowing that meat does not magically appear in styrofoam trays with plastic wrap at the grocery. Someone had to feed, clean, make sure there was water, and do it every day for weeks in order for the meat to hit the table.

One meat breed doe can outperform a beef cow in pounds of meat produced per year, on less feed...and by eating mostly alfalfa hay pellets, a crop humans don't consume.

The kids knew the meat rabbits weren't pets...you don't name them or play with them. You do make sure they had excellent care and were comfortable.

We had pet rabbits, too...they had names, and they were never eaten.

Seriously, I couldn't imagine having pet rabbits AND eating rabbits, even if we didn't eat the ones that were pets. Then again, when Lance would go fishing, I could never eat what he caught that day. He had to freeze it, and I could defrost it the next day... but could never eat what was just alive a little while ago.

I had 2 pet rabbits. When I was a teenager the dog got ahold of a baby rabbit in it's mouth & my dad told him to drop it. I ended up begging my folks to keep it. They named it George. One nite I came home with my dad & found my mom running around try to chase it around the house cuz it had gotten out of it's cage & was hopping around the washer lol. We had to help her catch it. Those things really hop. Yrs ago I got Mike a pet Rabbit for Valentines or Easter or something. He named it Speedy Rabbit. Some yrs later we gave it away to a woman who wanted him cuz it was too much trouble trying to care for him. Too cold in winter to keep him outside, too hot in summer to keep him inside and then if you go off somewhere out of town having to get someone to feed him awhile you're gone. They are cute tho...

It's really no different from having a milk cow, and raising steers for beef...!

I guess it also helps to have had farmer grandparents...it's harder to understand if you've never been exposed to that world.

We HAD a pet bunny when my daughter was still living at home.
It became a snack for a black bear about 7 years ago about 4 years after I saved it from another black bear that was at least twice my size.( I'm about 250 pounds)

Musta been a big bear.

Like Sue, I was raised by hunter types in farm country. Rabbit is awfully good when stewed. A bit stringy otherwise.

Well, I didn't wrestle the bear! I just yelled at him when I looked out one dark rainy midnight in March some years ago a saw him with our rabbit coop up on end. He ran when I yelled at him from my front door, some 30 feet from the coop. He was HUGE! I would estimate between 600 and 700 pounds.....perhaps more. They found one in our area a while back that was almost 800 pounds. That's big for a black bear. I'm just thankful that bears fear old hockey players. I mean if he yelled back, he coulda had the rabbitt and I would have asked him if he wanted to see a desert menu.

Everyone is afraid of old hockey players. After enough hits to the head, they are all pucked up. Mean stick action.

One might think my being in Alabama, hockey wouldn't be much. OTOH, look up the UAH Hockey Team. My alma mater. sigh..... Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn's son plays here. They come to town for the games.

Who woulda thunk it? I would have assumed that hockey in Alabamy was about as popular as grits in Maine.
