Pat, congrats with being "almost done" with school. What's your major? Do you have a job already lined up?

Hope everyone here in VA is okay. We just went thru an earthquake. I was on the bed trying to get over a sinus headache & I heard a loud rumbling noise. At first I thought it was the furnace & asked Mike if it was & he said no. It started rumbling louder & louder & I felt the house shake. I heard things shaking & rattling & clinking noises. It hit me this is acting like an earthquake but hey we aren't in California. It stopped after a few minutes but it was really scary. Mike & I were talking debating whether to call & report it on the news. I had on ch 12's 4 pm news & they said on there there was an earthquake here in VA & I knew then I was right, we indeed had just been thru an earthquake. Mike called ch 12 to let them know the earthquake hit here in Prince George. We are okay & no major damage. Some pictures & candles on the walls were moved. There are 2 cracks in the house. One on the living room wall & one on the foyer wall. & Around the ceiling of the foyer is a cracks. Yikes. I am so glad we are okay. Whew! I went to thru a hurricane a few months ago & now today an earthquake. We had an earthquake here in VA in 1966 but I didn't feel that one. I jsut heard about it later. Stay safe kids! <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/peace.gif" width=16 height=16>

Pat, congrats on being "out of jail" for a month!

Cheryl, is that like "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' on" or more like "If the House Is a Rockin', Don't Bother Knockin'"? Seriously, I'm glad you're both okay. That must have been scary.

Cheryl, glad you're ok. Earthquakes are actually very common in the Appalachians, for several different reasons.

We get them almost "frequently," here in the Reading area. One reason is the quarry up the road in Wyomissing. During the majorly horrible winter of 93-94, there was so much precip that the ground couldn't hold anymore water. The quarry quaked and some of the houses right on my block sustained damage.

I didn't know about the quake until after I bought my house in March of 94. We moved in in July and that's when I heard from my neighbors. Of course, these houses are almost 100 years old, so we have lots of plaster cracks anyway, so I wouldn't have been able to distinguish between normal cracks and earthquake cracks.

We had an earthquake a few weeks ago... no news on the cause, but probably the quarry again. In Phila we got them more often that what I feel here, like a train going thru my basement, very quick.

We live in what's known as The Reading Prong, running from Reading to Phila and into central New Jersey. It's home of the famous Radon. In Phila, we lived on top of a hill that overlooks part of the fault.

Again, glad everyone's ok. Here are some USGS web pages:

Thanks for the support ya'll. I heard on our news that people in PA & MD felt the earthquake too. Sure hope it didn't affect the folks in Terries area or any of ya'lls areas. In our living room we have a set of shelves cabinets with knick knacks in them that belonged to my late mother in law. I ahd on one of the shleves some matchbox sized antique cars. A few I had when I was a kid & the rest were ones my moms had got me for Christmas one yr some yrs back cuz I love antique cars. Well we found one of the antique cars sitting as pretty as you please on top of one of the other cars as if it had been placed there & the other cars kida crashed into each other LOL. Hedre are some links to some articles on the earthquake:

I'll bet the snow is really pretty! Wish I could see it (from inside, next to the fire).

Yep... it really is pretty!
Just down the block there's a place that has about 20 evergreens, with white lights... and now they are glowing through a coat of snow... beautiful!

Of course, the fire sounds like a good idea, too, but I don't think my landlord would be too happy, since I don't have a fireplace! LOL

(Ask me in February how I feel about snow!)

Since we're posting on the afternoon thread in the morning so that we can say good afternoon to Beverly where it is afternoon now, I'll say good morning, good afternoon, good evening to all who stop by. Cold, rainy, yucky. Take care and stay well!

Good morning, and good afternoon to all. We had snow here on Sunday (Eric and Lance made it back from IUP on a very UNeventful Saturday evening).

The snow changed to rain and so I was happy that I could drive, do my last-minute Hanukkah/Christmas shopping... and then came down with the flu!

Such is life. At least my tree looks (sorta) good.
