i was about to hitch a ride with a friend of mine once...when her car wouldn't start and after exhausting every other reasonable option with no results, she decided it was time to remove her size six high heel shoe and commence to whaling on something under the hood while cussing a blue streak (which worked evidently cuz after that the car started right up)

Actually, there is a reason that could work, if the problem is the alternator...

If there is corrosion inside the alternator, it will jam up the brushes ... and whacking it a good thump will sometimes dislodge the corrosion, and free up the brushes... and VOILA ... you're in business!

Bullshit. It simply has to do with a woman smacking the car into submission by scaring the hell out of it, ....6 inch heels or sandals, it matters not.There is no mechanical or scientific reason why it works, it just does.

Works (when you're lucky) with starters also... might be something about realigning the gears to bypass the broken tooth and allow the starter to turn just enough to cause the engine to start

Thanks for clarifying that, Larry! heehee!!!

A chunk of 2x4 would work too... and comes in handy as a chuck under the car if you need to change a tire, or if you have to beat off an assailant in a dark parking lot... (not that I've ever had to do that, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared!)

A hammer's a good idea to keep handy... for the starter as well as if your car ever plunges into a body of water (you may need to break your window to get out). I saw that on a driving safety show last night.

Not so much my car, but our car needs any sapre miricals anyone has going! We was supposed to be going camping on monday only all the electrics whent on the car so now we carn't go till thursday. The pain of it is the part that whent is a dealer only part so you can't pick them up anywhere, and the fact that it was water damage that had done it in the first place meens we couldn't risk one from the scrap yard. Something called a multi function unit!!!! basicly its just a junction box for all the electics ie:- lights, windscreen wipers clock and lights on the dash boad and regulats the altenater and batary. Alan(my friend) has had in his life at least 25 cars and not one of them has ever needed a multi function unit so why this car needs one to go wrong is way past me.
