Grit cautions protesters

Deputy PM Anne McLellan warned protesters planning to disrupt U.S. President George W. Bush's visit to Canada to start filling police in on their plans or risk "misunderstandings." McLellan called on the mass of protesters expected to converge on Ottawa for Tuesday's visit to be "civil."

"I would certainly call upon ... the organizers of any demonstrations to conduct themselves in a civil fashion and to work with local authorities to ensure there are no misunderstandings and that any demonstration that is held is a peaceful one," McLellan said yesterday.

"We expect a safe and very positive experience for everybody."

McLellan said the RCMP has been co-ordinating visit security with the U.S. Secret Service, but refused to divulge any details.

Protest organizers have said giving police a heads up on their plans would be a waste of time. They have been co-ordinating protests and finding places for out-of-town protesters to sleep.

More than 15 busloads of student protesters are expected from Montreal alone, and a marijuana smoke-in is planned for Parliament Hill Tuesday, while a Toronto website calling on Canadians to shut down the Bush visit is organizing its own buses.

Ottawa Police Staff Sgt. Monique Ackland said OPP and Toronto police officers will back up local police during Bush's visit.

The RCMP will be responsible for providing security to Bush and his entourage and the military is being kept in the loop by police planners, Ackland said.

"Everybody in this is working together," Ackland said.

Bush will travel in his bulletproof Cadillac DeVille presidential limousine while in Ottawa. It will arrive in a U.S. military plane before he touches down Tuesday.

Secret Service officials will take control of the Ottawa airport shortly before the president is expected to land and ban all landings and takeoffs until he has safely left Air Force One in his armoured limo.

Bush foes won't promise peace

IF BUSH comes to shove, protesters will push back. Local political activists fell short of committing themselves -- and the groups they represent -- to violent demonstrations during President George W. Bush's brief visit to the capital next week.

"It's going to be loud and it's going to be us protesting the real violence taking place in Iraq and around the world by the Bush administration," said No To Bush spokesman Joe Cressy.

Protesters say they'll consider crossing police lines if they aren't allowed close enough to Parliament Hill to get their message across.

'HE WILL HEAR US'

"Looking at the breadth of this movement, wherever Bush and (Prime Minister) Paul Martin are, whether it's a business luncheon, whether it's a working meeting, whether or not he goes to Parliament, he will hear us. The message will be clear. The message will get across," said Cressy.

The groups are bringing together a broad spectrum of Canadians denouncing the policies of the Bush administration. The message protesters are delivering is also being directed at Martin.

"These are not good policies and not welcome here," said Cressy. "Paul Martin will hear that and he will hear that very clearly."

Organizers have planned three days of demonstrations beginning on the eve of Bush's scheduled Nov. 30 touchdown in Ottawa.

On Monday, protesters will gather at the Supreme Court at 2 p.m. to support justice for Palestinians.

The No To Bush committee organizer also said various forms of civil disobedience and direct actions are planned by other groups on Wednesday when Bush visits Halifax.

When Bush arrives in Ottawa, two massive demonstrations are planned at Confederation Park at noon and another at 5 p.m. on Parliament Hill, where organizers say a 100,000 candlelight protest is planned.

'NOT A EUPHEMISM'

Organizers deny "direct action" means violence.

"Direct action is not a euphemism for violence," said Cressy.

Busloads of protesters are expected to arrive from Fredericton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and other cities .

"Bush always says you are with us or you are against us. I think something that speaks clearly today is that we are against him," said protester Stefan Christoff.

Awww, come on! Can't you keep him? At least 49% of us (or U.S.) have had more than enough of him. You should be warned, though, that he hasn't been neutered and is not house broken (he craps & pees on everything!). And there's a good chance that he may have rabies, so you should keep him quarantined for at least two weeks if he bites anyone.

The Hartford (Connecticut) Courant newspaper related a Washington Post article yesterday (11/28/04) which stated that, in 1981, 8% of Canadians had an unfavorable view of the USA. That percentage has now risen to 45% and, according to the article, much of that is due to George Dubya Bush. Well, that's still four points less unfavorable than American voters found him to be (49% of us voted for Kerry). So, the way I look at it, he's four percentage points better off in Canada. See? You wonderfully tolerant folks of the Great White North like him better than we do down here! So, there ya go! He's all yours! When he comes up there this week, PLEASE, keep him!

Capt. Zap, isn't rabies a brain disease? I believe it is ... in which case it would be impossible for Bush to have it.

Hey, Beverly. Yes, probably they are getting smaller--use more wrapping to make them look the same size. The manufacturers think we're all pretty stupid and won't notice. Happens all the time ... paper towel and toilet paper tubes are larger so it looks like we're getting the same amount on a roll, etc.

Meanwhile, the good news is, it's finally getting warmer (low 60s--delightful), the crocuses are in full bloom, and the snow hills have disappeared at last! YEAHHH!!!

(Of course all that melt means the driveway is a muddy mess. Needs more gravel, which hopefully will be delivered week now that we're finally unfrozen.)
