Thanks, everybody...I gotta check out those links. I was aware that the Kennedy-Nixon debate happened that day, but I know just about nobody who saw it---the biggest party in Pittsburgh history was going on.

This was a great, great day. Very hot, in the 70's. We had a crowd of about 300 people, but, for the first time I can remember, there were no media or former Pirates there.

One of my good buddies showed up, after all, on crutches, but I could not go with him to the Forbes Field Tavern afterward, as I have a heavy date with my wife tonight.

Radio Man Dan brought peanuts & cracker jack for everybody, & my boys played catch with his boys. There were a lot of first-timers. I held up visual aids at each key moment in the 8th & 9th innings---

The ball strikes Kubek in the adams apple---Coates fails to cover 1B---Hal Smith's homer---

in the words of Chuck Thompson: "Ladies & gentlemen, we have seen & shared in one of the most dramatic home runs in World Series history. (Long pause) Forbes Field used to be a ball park, now it is an outdoor insane asylum!"

An October 13 present for my brother Joe. On this date in 1960, in the 9th inning of the 7th game, Bill Mazeroski hit the home run that won the World Series for the Pittsburgh Pirates and lost it for the New York Yankees.

There are actually players here whose names I recognize. A lot of the Yankees, plus the Pirates' Roberto Clemente and that Maz guy for instance. And, of course, there is what is undoubtedly going to be my favorite baseball player name for a long, long, long time: Vinegar Bend Mizell .

Read Chuck Thompson's call of the homer again. Yes, he really did say the final score was 10-0 at first. He also had Art Ditmar pitching, whereas it was really Ralph Terry. This great, long-time announcer is best known for this error-filled call. His call of Hal Smith's homer in the 8th---"we have seen & shared.....outdoor insane asylum", etc. is a classic, but nobody ever hears it due to the Yankees tying the game in the 9th.

Wilmer "Vinegar Bend Mizell", of Vinegar Bend, Alabama, went into Congress after his playing days & passed away in recent years. I met him once at Piratefest & he could not have been nicer.

And Clemente, a boyhood hero...I still remember going to my first game in 1966 & seeing all that green grass & sitting in RF, behind Clemente. I couldn't take my eyes off him.

Years later (1998), when Sammy Sosa was involved in the home run chase, & I was really paying more attention to who he was, I was stunned watching him one day on TV----I was looking at him & seeing Clemente!!! He wears Clemente's number (21), grew up idolizing him, has adopted humanitarian causes like his idol, & has more than a slight facial resemblance. I was so sure that Sammy was a reincarnation of Roberto that I dashed to my Baseball Encyclopedia to look up his birthday, but, alas, he was 4 years old when the great Roberto was killed on a mission of mercy.

Later that year----the Bloggs family is at 3 Rivers Stadium when Sammy hits homer #57, breaking the National League record. We're in RF, sitting behind Sammy, & my kids just can't their eyes off him----like me with Clemente many years before. I just can't describe how cool that was.
