Made ya look!

Today was election day in our Anthropology Club at Kutztown University. Just as I was about to accept an invitation to go have a smoke, Dr. Jim says... wait... I nominate Terrie to be the President of this Club next year. Then someone quickly seconded it, then another instructor said "but she's the secretary and I like her emails." To which I asked if I could do both, cos I really enjoyed being the Club's secretary... then another prof said, sure, you can be Secretary General.

No vote was even taken! It seemed a foregone conclusion. The girl who originally asked me to join her for a cigarette break is now VP. And we're BOTH Forensics-bound... so at least I know she and I will get along great.

I'm sorta excited about it, it'll look good on my resume and applications for grad school. But, this Club's been dying for a long time... members don't bother showing up because there's no plan for a meeting, it's just become a gab-fest. And a lot of people are graduating next week.

If anyone has any ideas on how to boost and KEEP membership, please post them.

Forensics? Maybe your doing the wrong thing by trying to keep it alive...unless it's dna...

Kinda, sorta LOL. Actually, besides Steph (the new VP) and Jamie (the Treasurer) and the outgoing, graduating President Matt, the only students in attendance were my buddy Christopher who's not attending next Fall and Val who's quite shy and only shows up sometimes for meetings. We had 4 teachers there.

Our VP wasn't even there! I think he's actually attended 3 meetings all semester. I was glad he wasn't there because if he'd decided to move up to President for next sem, I'd have to veto really quickly. So, by someone actually nominating me, instead of my volunteering... it worked out... and no one felt bad (meaning the VP).

Actually, what Steph and I do is identify human remains. We can't use DNA (none left in old, dry bones) and the college can't afford tests anyway.

We're both taking Forensic Chem in the Fall... should be fun. Heard lots of good things about the class.

Forensic Anthropology is fun, we get to hang out in the bone lab whenever we want to. She just sorted through and "identified" somewhere around 25 Indians who were "stolen" from an ancient burial ground in upstate NY around 40 years ago. Some of the bones didn't "match" others and may be as old as several thousand years!

My case was a guy who'd been "hanging around" another college's basement for around 40 years and was only the upper half of the skeleton and skull, some teeth. It had a partial pelvis, everything wired. I identified it as a 26-35 yr old male, Black, around 5'4" to 5'6" and around 145 lbs. No pathology noted, but post-mortem damage, mostly by rodents. I'll find out on Tuesday how close I came to being correct in my report.

As for keeping the Club alive... gotta! It's one of the things I've looked forward to on Thursdays for 2 years now. Usually, it's fun, pizza, movies... but lately it's kinda gone downhill... our advisor was on sabatical in Brazil doing research and things here at the Club kinda fell apart in his absence. I hope we can revive the Club next Fall.

My cousin is a dentist and also an expert in dental forensics. When 9/11 happened, FEMA sent him to NYC to try to help identify people's remains. He didn't have a whole lot to work with, sorry to say.

Judy, yes... 9/11 was horrible in many ways. The forensics folks had very little to work with, matching bone fragments to teeth and trying to give the dead back to their families was a major task... thank goodness DNA's come a long way in the past decade.

I really want to be involved in the repatriation of Indian bones back to their tribes. That's a daunting task, too, as my classmate found out this semester.

I was just making a goofy joke about forensics being about dead stuff. My only brushes with forensics were as a nurse and photography. In both cases there was DNA everywhere.

As for the club, play some Arlo music in the background.

Yes, I know. I guess I just felt like "talking" all about my latest endeavor. I just get so excited talking about bones and identifications.

As for playing some Arlo in the background, I'm afraid they'll all stop coming to meetings for sure. I talk about Arlo enough, and most of them have no idea who he even is.

It might be fun if Arlo wrote a ridiculous song about bones... along the lines of the pickle/motorcickle or ring-around-the-rosie... maybe he can give us our own theme song <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif" width=15 height=15>
