NEW YORK — The kickoff bash for a Woody Guthrie exhibition Thursday (Feb. 3) was marked, appropriately enough, by a gathering
of the folksinger's kin and a seminar that turned into a sing-along.
His son Arlo Guthrie, daughter Nora Guthrie and three grandchildren, as well as folksinger Pete Seeger, were on hand to remember the life and music of Woodrow Wilson Guthrie...

PATRICIA CORRIGAN : Arlo Guthrie's social conscience goes
far beyond singing about it
By Patricia Corrigan

If you thought you saw Arlo Guthrie at the mall or in the bar at the Seven Gables
Inn earlier this month, you were right. In town a few days early for a concert April 14 at
the Sheldon, Guthrie spent some time shopping and hanging out, and he also stopped
in at Blueberry Hill to hear Chuck Berry.

"That," he told the sold-out crowd at the concert, "was cool."
...
Guthrie tours with two of his four grown children, Abe, 30, and Sarah, 21. Abe plays
keyboards and sings, and Sarah plays guitar and sings. They tour together 10 months
out of every year. The trio was a familiar sight here in the days before the concert. At
one point, Guthrie noted that he always is recognized in St. Louis more readily than in
any other city, but from all reports, Guthrie graciously talked with everyone who
stopped him to say hello.
...

Music Preview: Arlo Guthrie and his kids
keep on in the family tradition
.
.
"But they're not sitting on their hands at Rising Son. In the works are a record
of his father's songs with bluegrass group the Dillards (the Darlings from the
"Andy Griffith Show"), a soundtrack to an old documentary called "The Hard
Travelin' " and a planned live record. Arlo has also been appearing with
symphonies playing what he calls a synthesis of folk and American orchestral
music that's beyond the usual pops format.
"We're not just putting strings on an Arlo Guthrie tune," he says, "We're
writing for an orchestra that wants to play stuff, and the music is complex
and wonderful and interesting for the orchestra as well as the audience."
